The metro system in Moscow, Russia is responsible for transporting roughly 2.5 billion passengers each year.Zaha Hadid Architects is now helping to increase the capacity and connectivity of the network with a new station design aimed at making transportation comfortable, enjoyable and safe. ZHA will design the interchange between the orbital Bolshaya Koltsevaya Line and the future Biryulevskaya Line, called the Klenoviy Boulevard Station 2, which connects Kuryanovo and Biryulyovo districts directly with the city center. The design incorporates new innovations in lighting and passenger information systems, departing from more traditional and elegant ornamentation — like other lines in the city — and focusing on modern and innovative elements.
Defined by intuitive navigation, the new station will feature a series of columns on the platforms, with each column slightly varying in form to signify its distance from the center of the platform. The columns are designed as “arrows” to direct passengers and integrate lines of light on the ceiling and the floors. In order to elevate the environment and help travelers navigate through the space, the lighting at the platforms adjust to inform passengers of a train’s arrival. The station will also offer access to the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve and its park on the banks of the Moscow River, while connecting residents and visitors to Nagatinsky Zaton district with all of Moscow.
