Adele and Ed Sheeran Lead Nominations of Gender-Neutral 2022 Brit Awards

The ‘Easy on Me’ hitmaker ties with the ‘Bad Habits’ singer, Little Simz and Dave for the most nominations as this year’s nominations deliver the most female nominees in more than a decade.

AceShowbizAdele and Ed Sheeran are leading the race at the upcoming 42nd edition of the annual Brit Awards. Both singers bagged the most nominations, tied with Little Simz and Dave with four nods each.

Announced on Saturday, December 18 on an hour-long TV special, “The Brits Are Coming”, the nominations saw Adele, Ed Sheeran, Dave and Little Simz eying the top prize of Artist of the Year. Also up for the coveted title is Sam Fender.

Those five artists are also nominated for Album of the Year. Adele, Ed Sheeran and Dave are once again pitted against each other in the Song of the Year category with their songs “Easy on Me”, “Bad Habits” and “Clash” feat. Stormzy, respectively.

This year, the Song of the Year and International Song of the Year categories saw an expansion with 15 nominees each. In the international song category, Billie Eilish (“Happier Than Ever”), Doja Cat (“Kiss Me More” featuring SZA), Drake (“Girls Want Girls” featuring Lil Baby), The Kid LAROI & Justin Bieber (“Stay”), Lil Nas X (“Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”), Olivia Rodrigo (“Good 4 U”) and The Weeknd (“Save Your Tears”) are among the contenders.

Little Mix, who this year became the first female act to win best British group, are in the running for that prize once again. They are facing up against Coldplay, D-Block Europe, London Grammar and Wolf Alice for the prize.

Griff is nominated for Best New Artist after taking the Brits rising star award at the 2021 edition of the prize-giving event. Meanwhile, Holly Humberstone was already announced as this year’s winner of the rising star award.

ABBA received a nomination for International Group of the Year. BTS, Maneskin, Silk Sonic (Bruno Mars/Anderson .Paak) and The War on Drugs are also among the nominees.

The winners of the four new genre categories, rock/alternative act, hip hop/grime/rap act, dance act, pop/R&B act, will be determined by a public vote via TikTok, which will open on January 21. The prizes will be handed out on February 8, 2022 at London’s O2 Arena, with comedian Mo Gilligan being tapped to serve as the host.

When the Brits announced they would scrap the gendered categories that separate male and female talent last month, there were fears that it would result in women being overlooked. The concern was unproven as this year’s nominations deliver the most female nominees in more than a decade, but male artists still dominate the list.
