Australia fires: Queen + Adam Lambert headline benefit concert? Brian May message

The fires raging in Australia have left the nation reelin while the world watches in horror. More than half a billion wildlife are estimated to have been killed or at risk. Entire towns have been evacuated while people flee to the beaches and the smoke fills the sky across in New Zealand. Fundraising efforts will now include a major concert in Sydney, with Queen and Adam Lambert expected to headline.

Fire Fight Australia, a bushfire benefit concert will take place at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney on February 16.

The promoters TEG Dainty and TEG Live made the announcement today and confirmed they are speaking to major international and local artists to take part.

All eyes are on Queen and Adam Lambert. Not only will they be in Australia as part of the current World Tour, they actually play a concert at the very same stadium the night before, February 15 and have a four-day break before their next show in Melbourne on February 19.

Local nationals media site News.com.au said: “It is likely British rock legends Queen will be one of the headliners.”

Brian May has frequently campaigned for animal rights, using his Instagram page to speak up against cruelty and the mistreatment of animals.

With fires still raging across Australia, there are fears some species are now facing extinction, including koalas which were previously categorised as “vulnerable to extinction”.

Today May posted a powerful and heartfelt message about the horrifying situation in Australia.

May wrote: “Can’t stop thinking about the tragic Australian fires. And feel so helpless.

“I have many family members in Australia, all of whom I’m hoping to see in a month’s time on our planned Australian tour. The young generation are involved in fighting the fires on Kangaroo Island. Respects.

“Thousands of good people lost their homes. 24 good folks lost their lives. And … HALF A BILLION WILD ANIMALS burned to death in NSW alone? Can it be true? Almost unthinkable. And no end in sight?”

May added: “What can we do? We can pray. And we can put pressure on our leaders to prioritize the health of our planet rather than ‘The Economy.’

“It’s already too late for these creatures. We can only pray it’s not too late for the rest of our world. To all our Australian friends – we send love – and our prayers.”

Numerous celebrities have already pledged money to the various fundraising efforts around the world.

US pop star Pink pledged $500,000 as did Australians Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman.

Some of the latest reports indicate up to 16million acres of land have been burned and the death count currently stands at 25, including three firefighters.

The continent is accustomed to extreme weather and bush fires have become an annual occurrence. These are among the worst in recorded history but still dwarfed by the fires of 1974 and 1975 which burned an estimated 240million acres.
