Singer Bob Dylan has been accused of abusing a 12-year-old girl, known in court documents as J.C, in the sixties as he faces a lawsuit claiming assault, battery, false imprisonment and infliction of emotional distress.
The civil lawsuit was filed on Friday with allegations that he plied the girl with drugs and alcohol before sexually abusing her in his apartment at New York’s Hotel Chelsea in 1965.
It is claimed that he used “drugs, alcohol and threats of physical violence”, which is said to have left her “emotionally scarred and psychologically damaged to this day”.
A representative for Bob Dylan has denied the claims.
The alleged victim claims in her 13-page lawsuit that the alleged abuse has resulted in her seeking long term medical treatment.
In court documents, it is claimed the victim has suffered “severe mental distress, anguish, humiliation and embarrassment, as well as economic losses”.
J.C, who is now aged 68, lives in Greenwich, Connecticut, which follows New York law of the “look back window” allowing victims of sexual assault to submit claims regardless of how long ago the alleged incident took place.
The statute of limitations had initially passed for her allegations, but New York’s 2019 Child Victims Act allows survivors of childhood sexual abuse to submit claims up until August 14, 2021.
The initial window allowed victims to submit claims until January 14, 2021 but it was extended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The woman is said to be seeking unspecified damages and a jury trial against the 80-year-old musician.
The claims have been denied by a representative for Dylan, who told The Mirror: “This 56-year-old claim is untrue and will be vigorously defended.”
It has been reported by the publication that the alleged abuse took place on multiple occasions, with some of the incidents said to have taken place at the Chelsea Hotel.
Dylan, whose real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman, has been a popular musician globally for 60 years.
The singer has not been arrested in relation to the allegations.
