Buck Henry dead: The Graduate screenwriter dies aged 89

Legendary film writer, Buck Henry has died aged 89 in a Los Angeles Hospital.

The Oscar-nominated star, whose real name was Henry Zuckerman was 89. He was responsible for The Graduate, along with What's Up Doc?

He went on to co-create Get Smart, before becoming a regular during the early years of Saturday Night Live.

The star's cause of death has been confirmed as a heart attack at Cedars-Sinai Health Centre in Los Angeles.

A relative of Buck confirmed the news to US publication, Deadline.

The 89-year-old bagged a pair of Oscar nominations for his adapted screenplay of The Graduate and another for directing alongside Warren Beatty for the 1978 film, Heaven Can Wait.

Henry also won a writing Emmy in 1967 for Get Smart, a spy spoof which he created alongside Mel Brooks.

He became a familiar face to television viewers when he hosted the famous Saturday Night Live multiple times during its first five series.

Buck may also be remembered as John Belushi's foil in the Samurai skits.

He also boasted several acting credits alongside his successful career behind the camera.

His received his writing break on Steve Allen and Garry Moore's TV shows from 1960 before he penned the classic, The Graduate.

The hit went on to receive seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. It eventually made the top 10 in the AFI's 100 Years… 100 Movies list in 1998.
