In the Heights: Everything We Know So Far

In the Heights is getting us excited for big summer blockbusters all over again. New trailers for the film premiered last night during the Grammy Awards, teasing a vibrant on-screen spectacular, adapted from Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’s 2008 Broadway musical.

Set in Manhattan’s Washington Heights neighborhood, the musical celebrates the community’s Latinx identities and cultures while exploring family, home, and dreams—all with massive dance numbers and an energetic score. “For some people, home is somewhere else. For some people, home is the block there,” Miranda told reporters before the trailer premiered. “And so, you know, that’s worth singing about. That’s worth celebrating in a movie this size.”

Here’s what to know about the upcoming release.

It premieres on June 18.

In the Heights arrives in theaters on Friday, June 18. It arrives on HBO Max on the same day and will be available to stream for 31 days after the premiere. Watching the movie will be no extra cost to subscribers, but those who aren’t already signed up will have to register for the subscription, which costs $15 per month. Sadly, there is no more free trial option.

In the Heights was originally set to release in June 2020, but due to COVID-19 delays and safety precautions, it was postponed for a whole year.

The cast is huge.

Yes, Miranda makes a cameo, but the cast members each shine on their own. Anthony Ramos (A Star Is Born, Hamilton), leads as bodega owner and ambitious dreamer Usnavi, the role Miranda had originated onstage.

Also in the cast are Corey Hawkins (Straight Outta Compton, BlacKkKlansman), singer Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera (Vida), Olga Merediz (In the Heights original Broadway cast), Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent), Gregory Diaz IV (Matilda the Musical), Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Dascha Polanco (Orange Is the New Black), and Jimmy Smits (the Star Wars franchise).

Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu is directing from a screenplay by Quiara Alegría Hudes, who wrote the book for the original musical. (Miranda was credited for the music, lyrics, and story.)

The original musical was nominated for 13 Tonys.

In the Heights first opened off Broadway in 2007, then premiered on Broadway in May 2008 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, where it ran for almost three years. It was nominated for 13 Tony Awards in 2008—the most out of any other musical that year—and won four: Best Musical, Best Choreography, Best Original Score, and Best Orchestrations.
