Inside Ricky Gervais and Tom Hanks tumultuous relationship after awkward run ins

Ricky Gervais, 60, has appeared several times over the years as a host at the Golden Globes, and is very good at making controversial jokes about celebrities in attendance.

No one is safe with Ricky around, and the comedian has successfully managed to mock some of the most famous Hollywood actors there are.

Most celebs can laugh and shrug Ricky’s jibes off, but Tom Hanks was visibly unimpressed with Ricky’s jokes at the 2020 Golden Globe awards.

Ricky said: “I came here in a limo tonight and the license plate was made my Felicity Huffman,” in reference to the college admissions scandal.

The stony-faced reaction Tom had to the jokes became a viral meme shortly after, when a photographer at the event captured his facial expression.

Comedian Ricky later spoke about the awkward situation in November 2020, chatting to Christian O’Connell on the Stuff of Legends podcast.

He told Christian: “The big meme was Tom Hanks going: ‘Why is he saying that?’

“And people going, ‘Oh look he’s on his high horse,’ but when Leonardo DiCaprio laughed, people loved him for it.”

"I could say a lot worse things about them, but I don't want it to get really nasty and for no reason."

He added: "I think people who laugh at a joke, they get a round of applause because people go, 'Oh that's good, they can take it,' we don't want people to be above it.

"We even let people be privileged as long as they say, 'I know I'm privileged but I'm nothing really,' we don't like people to go 'Oh I deserve it, how dare you talk to me like that'."

Ahead of the awkward encounter in 2020 Ricky did admit he felt a bit regretful of a joke he made way back in 2011, about Tom and Toy Story co-tar Tim Allen.

He said there was no “malice” in his joke and didn’t want Tim to feel bad about it.

Ricky said to the Hollywood Reporter: “I’m teasing Tim Allen. "But anyone standing next to Tom Hanks, unless it’s Dustin Hoffman or Robert Redford or Robert De Niro, that could be me.

“But it happened to be Tim Allen. And I have nothing against Tim Allen. He’s a good actor. He’s probably a nice bloke."

Ricky made the quip when inviting Tom and Tim onstage, and said: "What can I say about our next two presenters?"

"The first is an actor, producer and director whose movies have grossed over $3.5bn at the box office. He’s won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes for his powerful and varied performances, starring in such films as Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Castaway, Apollo 13 and Saving Private Ryan. The other… is Tim Allen."

Tom clearly didn’t like the comparison made and hit back: "We remember when Ricky Gervais was a slightly chubby but very kind comedian – neither of which he is now.”
