Kurt Cobain revealed secret ‘relatable’ inspiration for hit song in unearthed interview

Kurt Cobain tragically took his own life at the age of 27 back in 1994. Since then, fans of him and his music have pored over a number of interviews and comments to find out as much about him as humanly possible. Many of his interviews focussed on his music, performing live, and the inspiration behind his work.

Now, it has been revealed that Cobain gave a 23-minute interview with Much Music TV channel in Canada just nine months before his death.

During the interview Cobain is seen smiling and joking about various things, and – most importantly – discussing his music at length.

Whilst speaking to interviewer Erica Ehm, he explained he had read a book called Perfume around “ten times”.

The book, which was penned by author Patrick Suskind, focusses on an agoraphobic man with an acute sense of smell.

Cobain joked the book made him “want to cut my nose off” before adding: “because I’m a hypochondriac and it just affects me.”

The interview then saw Cobain explain the premise of the novel, saying: “This perfume apprentice in France at the turn of the century and he’s just disgusted, basically, with all humans and he just can’t get away from humans.

“So he goes on this trek, this walk of death… he goes into the rural areas where there are woods all over the place and small villages… and he only travels by night.

“And every-time he smells a human, like a fire from a far off way, he’ll just get really disgusted and hide.”

He went on to laugh: “He just tries to stay away from people… I can relate to that.”

This retelling of the book was in fact the basis of Cobain’s confession that it went on to inspire the Nirvana song “Scentless Apprentice”.

He told the interviewer it was the “first and only time” he’s ever used a pre-existing story to inspire a song.

While Scentless Apprentice was never an enormous hit for the band, it does have its own following, as Cobain screams the lyrics: “Go away! Go away!” in the chorus.

As fans know, Cobain’s death was shrouded in misery, as he took his own life just under a year later.

Within the note he left to his family, it was revealed he made an oblique reference to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

The note read: “When we’re back stage and the lights go out and the manic roar of the crowds begins, it doesn’t affect me the way in which it did for Freddie Mercury.

“Who seemed to love, relish in the the love and adoration from the crowd which is something I totally admire and envy.” (sic)

He went on to add: “The fact is, I can’t fool you, any one of you. It simply isn’t fair to you or me.

“The worst crime I can think of would be to rip people off by faking it and pretending as if I’m having 100% fun,” he continued.

“Sometimes I feel as if I should have a punch-in time clock before I walk out on stage.

“I’ve tried everything within my power to appreciate it (and I do, God, believe me I do, but it’s not enough).”
