Hoppus brought pop-punk fans to a standstill earlier this year when he announced on his Instagram account that he had been diagnosed with stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma – an aggressive blood cancer. The star has since been cleared of the disease, but just after he first learned about it, he broke the news to his estranged lead singer, Tom DeLonge.
Hoppus told the world by announcing: “For the past three months I’ve been undergoing chemotherapy for cancer. I have cancer. It sucks and I’m scared, and at the same time I’m blessed with incredible doctors and family and friends to get me through this.”
A short while after he had initially found out about the cancer, he was contacted by DeLonge who was looking for Hoppus’ signature on some legal papers.
He revealed: “Tom sent me a picture of him in front of these women in his video shoot and they were all in lingerie. He texted me like: ‘Hope you’re doing good. I’m over here making art!’ And that’s when I told him.” (Via GQ)
DeLonge dramatically quit Blink-182 back in 2015, reportedly leaving the band not talking to the singer. Hoppus and the Blink drummer, Travis Barker, soon hired Matt Skiba to take over the band’s vocals.
But after the star’s diagnosis announcement, everything changed.
Barker visited Hoppus’ house to talk about the news. And, in an unexpected coincidence, DeLonge arrived as well.
DeLonge said: “I didn’t know Travis was going to show up, and I was like: ‘Oh, s**t, band meeting!'”
The three original members of the band reportedly sat in Hoppus’ garden “for hours” where they opened up to one another.

DeLonge said: “We got into more life stuff. What we’ve learned over the years about ourselves. How we’ve grown, how nothing really matters when it boils down to what we were dealing with in that moment.
“And so, it wasn’t some big meeting about Blink-182, it was more about brothers meeting and saying: ‘How do we support Mark?'”
Months later, in September 2021, Hoppus announced he was cancer free – along with a subtle thanks to the rest of the band.
Hoppus told his followers: “Just saw my oncologist and I’m cancer free!! Thank you God and universe and friends and family and everyone who sent support and kindness and love.” (sic)
He didn’t get out of the life-changing diagnosis unscathed, though.
The 49-year-old confessed how he had “a really dark time” after finding out about his cancer.
He explicitly explained how he thought a lot about Adam’s Song, a track he penned when he wanted to take his own life.
Hoppus said: “I’ve had a lot of thoughts about my own mortality, a lot of thoughts about what happens when I’m gone, and so I’ve been listening to Adam’s Song, thinking, yeah, tomorrow holds such better days.”
The star seems positive, however. He is still cracking jokes on Twitter and recently gave a further update on his condition.
He wrote: “Post-chemotherapy recovery update: This morning I did a 52-minute workout, and subsequently am in bed at 6pm.”
