Update, March 3, 2020:
Looks like Megan isn’t going down without a fight, y’all. Less than 48 hours after her Instagram Live, Megan has already filed a lawsuit against 1501 Entertainment for at least $1 million in damages.
According to TMZ, Megan claims that 1501 set up her contract so they get 60 percent of her recording income. So all the money that Megan makes from her singles and album sales? Yep, she’s pocketing less than half of that. The remaining 40 percent goes to Megan, but get this—she has to use her own money she makes from her music to pay people featured on her songs, as well as the sound engineers and mixers who helped create them.
And if that weren’t already hella concerning, Megan’s lawsuit also said all money from her touring and live performances goes straight to 1501. She’s supposed to be given some compensation, but her original contract was “purposefully and deceptively vague,” allegedly so they could benefit as much as possible.
The good news here is that following Megan’s lawsuit, a Texas judge granted Megan a temporary restraining order that’ll allow her to drop new music on Friday (!!!) without her label’s interference. The restraining order also prevents 1501 label members from bashing her on social media, meaning that Meg’s getting the release she deserves.
NEW MUSIC WILL BE DROPPING 🙏🏽🔥
On the other hand, Carl Crawford, CEO and founder of 1501 Entertainment, said that Megan is making this whole thing up. In an interview with Billboard, Carl called Megan “delusional” and said the music industry has gone to her head.
He said:
Megan’s lawsuit also claimed that her advance for getting signed to 1501 was only $10,000, but Carl disputes this and says she was paid five times that when they initially cut her deal.
Carl added:
In addition to refuting Megan’s advance claims, Carl also doesn’t believe Megan had to use the 40 percent of her recording income to pay out third parties like her lawsuit claims. Carl said he’s certain Megan is actually the one who owes 1501 money—$2 million, to be exact.
It’s unclear whether Carl and 1501 will file a countersuit, but something tells me this isn’t the last we’ll hear of this drama!
Original Story, March 2, 2020:
It’s no secret that record labels don’t always make the best choices for their artists—I mean, remember when Tinashe’s former record label RCA delayed the release of her album for three whole years until she signed to Roc Nation? It sounded awful, and now a similar situation is happening with everyone’s favorite Hot Girl, Megan Thee Stallion.
On Instagram Live, Megan said that fans shouldn’t expect new music from her anytime soon because she said her record label, 1501 Entertainment, is preventing the release of her upcoming album, Suga. Megan went on a lengthy rant and explained that when she signed with 1501, she was young and uneducated about her contract terms. After recently signing with Roc Nation for management, Megan learned about unfavorable terms in her contract with 1501 and wanted to renegotiate them. But when Megan brought this to the table, 1501 apparently wouldn’t hear her out and is now stopping the release of her new material.

Shortly after her Instagram Live, Megan created her own hashtag to raise awareness about what’s going on.
#FREEMEG #FREETHEESTALLION
1501 Entertainment has yet to make any formal response to these claims, but the label’s CEO and founder, Carl Crawford, posted a cryptic message on Instagram after Megan’s statement.
“At a time when loyalty is at an all-time low, it’s nice to be link with @jprincerespect who is steady teaching me how to move in this cutthroat industry,” he wrote. “And I know that terrifies some, especially the ones who double-cross me.”

It kinda goes without saying, but obviously: #FREETHEESTALLION.
