17-year-old Memphis rapper NLE Choppa burst onto the scene over a year ago with his addicting and menacing “Shotta Flow”. The industry took notice, and then over the course of the next 365 days or so he courted major co-signs while dropping his Cottonwood mixtape. Late last week Choppa finally released his highly-anticipated debut studio album, Top Shotta, 20 songs clocking in at over an hour of material with high–profile guests like Roddy Ricch, Lil Baby, Chief Keef and Mulatto all offering guest vocals.
On “Narrow Road” featuring Lil Baby, Choppa tells the story of his drug abuse from a young age with expert melodies for one of the stronger tracks on the effort. His charisma with Roddy Ricch on “Walk Em Down” helped create one of his biggest hits to date when it dropped back in March. “Shotta Flow 4” with Chief Keef is reminiscent of a flow you’d find from DaBaby while the instrumental sounds like an inebriated version of Chris Brown and Busta Rhymes’ “Look at Me Now.” Keef’s slurred delivery stands in stark contrast with Choppa’s and it works wonders. Top Shotta is at times triumphant and deeply personal. It’s a strong debut, especially given the Memphis rapper’s age.
