Piers Morgan slams Whoopi Goldberg over claims Holocaust was not about race

Piers Morgan has lashed out at Whoopi Goldberg after she claimed the death of six million Jews during the Holocaust was "was not about race."

The actress, 66, created controversy by claiming that the Nazis did not kill people based on their race during an episode of US chat show The View on Monday (January 31).

She was discussing the removal of Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel Maus from eighth-grade curriculum by a Tennessee school board after they deemed it unsuitable because of bad language and the depiction of female nudity.

The book focuses on Jewish victims being tortured and murdered by Nazis during World War Two and was removed after parents demanded change over books where the focus lies on race, gender identity, and sexuality.

Reacting to the comment Piers Morgan tweeted: "WTF? This is insane. The extermination of 6 million Jews wasn't about race???

"Will any rock stars or renegade royals now boycott Whoopi Goldberg and/or ABC for this dangerous misinformation?"

Discussing the book on the show Whoopi said: "I'm surprised that's what made you uncomfortable, the fact that there was some nudity.

"I mean, it's about the Holocaust, the killing of six million people, but that didn't bother you?

“Well, this is white people doing it to white people. Y’all go fight amongst yourselves.”

She continued: "If you're going to do this, then let's be truthful about it. Because the Holocaust isn't about race. No, it's not about race."

The View co-host Joy Behar then pointed out that the Nazis said Jewish people were a different race.

Whoopi responded: "But it's not about race. It's not. It's about man's inhumanity to other man."

Anna Navarro then interjected: "But it's about white supremacy. It's about going after Jews and Gypsies and Roma."

Whoopi replied: "But these are two white groups of people."

Co-host Sara Haines then stated that the Nazis "didn't see them as white".

To which Whoopi answered: "But you're missing the point! The minute you turn it into race, it goes down this alley. Let's talk about it for what it is. It's how people treat each other. It's a problem."

Whoopi has since apologised for the comments, saying: "On today's show I said the Holocaust 'is not about race but about man's inhumanity to man'.

"I should have said it is about both.
