Piers Morgan’s jibe earned him star role in Kate Garraway’s wedding to Derek

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway and husband Derek Draper tied the knot 15 years ago today.

It will be an emotional day for ITV star Kate, 53, as Derek's health hangs in the balance.

The former Labour lobbyist has been seriously ill since he was rushed to hospital with coronavirus on March 29.

While he no longer has the virus, the damage has been extensive and doctors don't know when, or even if, Derek will be able to fully recover.

Kate's GMB co-star Piers Morgan managed to land himself a major role in the couple's big day back in September 10 2005.

Viewers are aware of Kate and Piers' close friendship but the pair are rarely seen on screen together due to their conflicting work schedules.

Piers has been a rock for Kate with Derek still fighting for his life in hospital, and the outspoken star has in fact known Derek for just as long as he's known Kate.

Derek was a political lobbyist the same time as Piers was editor of the Daily Mirror, so the pair had major rivalry over the years.

Piers confessed on GMB earlier this year: "He was quite aggressive then and we would lock horns."

Derek later left the world of politics and struck up an unlikely friendship with the former newspaper editor.

Kate was introduced to husband Derek by a GMTV colleague, Gloria De Piero, in 2004.

Piers was stunned when he first found out that Kate and Derek were in a relationship and made a hilariously mean joke to the pair.

Admitting they were an unlikely duo, Piers said: "Because I knew you both separately but when I knew you were getting married I was like, 'What?!'"

During a Press Gazette awards, Piers came in and cried: "Derek [swear word] Draper?

"If I'd known your bar was set so low I'd have had a crack myself."

Luckily, Kate and Derek found the comment so funny that they made it part of their wedding day.

"It made Derek laugh and you put it on your wedding menus," Piers said.

Kate and Derek said "I do" at St Mary The Virgin Church in London's posh Primrose Hill back in September 2005.

Unbeknownst to their 100 guests, Kate was secretly three months pregnant with their daughter Darcey, and was hugely emotional as they exchanged vows, wiping away her tears as the vicar pronounced them husband and wife.

Derek lifted Kate's heavy veil to kiss her before they walked down the aisle together as a friend played Aerosmith's I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing on the piano.

The happy couple's guests included Fiona Phillips and Mr Martin Frizzell, Penny Smith, and John Stapleton – although Derek's ex-boss Peter Mandelson was nowhere to be seen.

Kate and Derek are parents to two children, Darcy, 14 and William 11.
