Shania Twain says it was intense to learn husband cheated with her best friend

Shania Twain has spoken out about her divorce from cheating ex-husband Robert "Mutt" Lange in the trailer for her new Netflix documentary Not Just a Girl.

In the clip the chart-topping singer is seen looking back at memories of her devastation at learning that Robert was committing adultery with her secretary and close friend Marie-Anne Thiébaud.

Shania, 56, admitted feeling "it was similarly intense to losing [her] parents" in the footage released to viewers on the streaming site on Wednesday.

Her parents Jerry and Sharon Twain both died when they were involved in a tragic car accident in November 1987.

She continued: "I thought I had lost my voice forever. I thought that was it."

Canadian Shania first met Robert when he got in touch with her in 1993 after listening to a selection of tracks from her self-titled debut album.

The South African music producer offered to work with her on more material, leading to several telephone exchanges between the pair before they finally met at Nashville's Fan Fair in June 1993.

The five-time Grammy Award winner found herself wrapped up in a whirlwind romance with him, and the pair were married six months later in December 1993.

Robert became a driving force behind her career, co-writing and producing an array of her best-selling hits including You're Still the One, Man! I Feel Like a Woman! and That Don't Impress Me Much.

Shania gave birth to their son Eja on August 12, 2001.

The couple eventually separated in May 2008 after 14 years of marriage, with Roberts's affair with Marie-Anne the reason for the split.

Devastated Shania was betrayed further as Robert and Marie-Anne initially denied their affair prolonging her emotional turmoil.

She was already struggling with her health after a 2003 diagnosis of dysphonia left her unable to sing, with her condition worsening due to the stress of the affair.

Marie-Anne was also married at the time to Swiss businessman Frédéric Thiébaud, with Shania and Frédéric forming a close bond over their spouses cheating on them.

The two began dating in 2009 and got engaged in December 2010, they subsequently married at an intimate ceremony in Rincon, Puerto Rico on New Year's Day in 2011.

Shania opened up to People magazine about their romance in 2011, admitting she never expected they would fall in love.

She said: "I didn't want to love again it was the last thing on my mind. I rejected it initially. But I couldn't control Fred's love for me and how easy he is to love."
