Despite being 80-years-old Sir Tom Jones recently released his 41st studio album. Surrounded By Time came out last week and has received a collection of rave reviews. The record has a number of classic covers on it, including One More Cup of Coffee and Pop Star. Today, the Welsh singer announced on his social media accounts that Surrounded By Time reached number one in the album charts.

Sir Tom posted an image of himself holding an award from the Official Charts company.

He captioned the image: “WOW!… at 80 years old, I have a NUMBER 1 ALBUM!

“Thank you to everybody who has listened to Surrounded By Time. It is gratifying and humbling and it means so much that you are enjoying the tunes and have embraced this musical journey.

“I’ve loved every minute of making this record and bringing it to you, and it’s an incredible feeling to know your support and love is out there. Enjoy!”

The Official Charts website followed up by adding that, at 80-years-and-10-months-old, Sir Tom Jones is the oldest man to claim a number one album on the Official Album Charts.

He told the website: “I am thrilled beyond words with the reception for Surrounded By Time, and to now hold these UK chart records is tremendous, just unbelievable.

“I am so proud of everyone who helped me create this music, I had a ball working with them and to get this result is just incredible.

“It’s wonderful that the public has allowed me to be musically expressive at my time of life and have shown their support. I am forever grateful.”

This is Sir Tom’s fourth number one album in his career.

His last number one was in 1999 with his 34th studio album Reload.

This album was particularly successful as it had the legendary song Sex Bomb on it, as well as a cover of INXS track Never Tear Us Apart.

Sir Tom’s fans flocked to his Instagram post to praise him on the hit.

Sir Tom Jones discusses 'importance' his wife had in his life

DJ and all-around celebrity Emma Willis commented: “Yes Tom!!! Still smashing it, you wonderful man…”

While another fan said: “Legend! There’s no other word! See you in September Sir Tom!”

The legendary singer recently spoke out about the first track on the album, I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall, and how the lyrics had special meaning to him after his wife, Lady Linda, died.

His wife lost her life in 2016 following a “short but fierce” battle against cancer. The couple were married for 59 years.

He told The One Show: “It’s like the first one I Won’t Crumble With You If You Fall, like when my late wife Linda, God bless her, she had lung cancer and she was passing away. I was there in the hospital room with her for the last 10 days.”

Sir Tom continued: “I said: ‘My God, Linda, I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself. I won’t be able to sing, I won’t be able to get the words out.’

“And she said: ‘You must, don’t fall with me. I’ve got to go but you don’t have to. You’ve got to go and do what we planned to do,’ which was to move back to London.

“‘But I’ve just run out of time but you’ve got to go out and do that now.’”

Sir Tom Jones’ album Surrounded By Time is out now.
