Get real loose. Blanco Brown’s song “The Git Up” is climbing the music charts, earning success and popularity from a viral dance challenge. Does Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus‘s “Old Town Road” have some competition? Learn about the viral trend that’s taking the internet by storm, here.
Blanco Brown wrote ‘The Git Up’
“Old Town Road” might have opened the door for country-rap artists, but Blanco Brown is following his footsteps. Blanco Brown headlined Spotify’s showcase at the CMA Fest, highlighting what he calls “trailer trap.” An example of that unique sound, the artist released “The Git Up” on SoundCloud in April 2019.
“When I wrote and recorded ‘The Git Up,’ there was just this energy around it that made all of us so happy. It’s so exciting to see that energy connecting organically with people around the world,” Brown said in an interview with USA TODAY. “Young and old. Female or male. Black, brown or white. It seems to be bringing a smile to everyone’s face, and that is a big part of what I believe is driving this virally.”
A YouTube video of Blanco dancing with Lainey Wilson earned over 3 million views. Then, listeners started dancing to “The Git Up” and posting their own videos online. The rest is history.

‘The Git Up’ is trending on TikTok and the music charts
Blanco Brown’s song was initially released on SoundCloud. Then, “The Git Up” gained momentum. The song became a dance challenge and an internet trend, hundreds of fans submitted videos of themselves dancing on TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram.
Only a few weeks after Blanco Brown released his music on Spotify, “The Git Up’ earned over 9 million plays. It earned recognition on music charts, jumping to the No. 66 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” music chart. This single even topped songs by mainstream artists like “Before I Let Go” by Beyoncé.
“I’m telling you right now ‘The Git Up’ by Blanco Brown is the next banger 100%,” said one Twitter user.
But don’t worry Billy Ray Cyrus and Lil Nas X fans. “Old Town Road” is still dominating the music charts, enjoying the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s “Hot 100” music chart.
This wasn’t the first viral dance challenge
Before TikTok grew in popularity, challenge videos were popular on other social media platforms. There was the “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge,” which helped raise money and awareness for the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The “Harlem Shake” encouraged dancers to show off their best moves, the crazier and weirder the better.
With the release of her Netflix documentary Homecoming: A Film By Beyoncé and her live album, Homecoming, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter started the “Before I Let Go” challenge.
Most recently, Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road” inspired fans to show off their inner cowboy. The song reached all the way up to Disney Channel, with Sofia Carson doing a cover of the song for the Radio Disney Music Awards, renamed the ARDYs. Most recently, musician and entrepreneur Rihanna took a picture with Lil Nas X.
Only time will tell if “The Git Up” Challenge will be the internet’s next big trend. Until then, fans on social media wear their biggest cowboy hats and show off their best moves.
