The Real Meaning Behind Taylor Swift’s ‘Jump Then Fall’ (Taylor’s Version)

The re-recorded version of Taylor Swift’s sophomore album, Fearless, has 27 tracks on it, which is quite the gift for Swifties. The album has really morphed over time, and this version, of which Swift will own all of the masters, includes six previously unreleased “vault” songs that never made it onto the album. (In case you’re wondering, they are: “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” “We Were Happy,” “That’s When,” “Don’t You,” “Bye Bye Baby,” and “You All Over Me,”  the titles of which Swift dropped early for fans.) But the original Fearless, released in 2008, also originally had just 13 songs on it before the “platinum” version was released in November 2009.

Swifties love a re-release, a re-record, and fresh tracks, and always have. When the expanded version was released, it came with five new tracks. Per Bow Lyrics, the album entered the Hot 100 at #10 when it was first released, and then all five of the new tracks made it into the Top 30, which made Swift the first artist to have five songs in the Top 30 in a single week — pretty impressive! One of those songs, “Jump Then Fall,” is a personal fave of Swift herself. Here’s the story.

Taylor Swift loves the vibe of this song

“Jump Then Fall” is a classic Taylor Swift song that focuses on crushing on a boy and hoping they take the risk to go all in with you. She wrote in a note that came with the platinum version, “[It’s a song about] jumping then falling into the most beautiful summer love imaginable.”

The lyrics are straightforward enough. “I like the way you sound in the morning/We’re on the phone and without a warning/I realize your laugh is the best sound/I have ever heard,” she sings (via Genius). “I like the way I can’t keep my focus/I watch you talk, you didn’t notice/I hear the words but all I can think is/We should be together,” she continues. The pre-chorus is basically just a love Post-It assuring this guy she is IN. “Every time you smile, I smile/And every time you shine, I’ll shine for you,” Taylor sings.

In later verses and into the chorus, she tells this guy that she knows there might be low times, but that she’ll be there to “catch” him. “Baby, I’m never gonna leave you/Say that you wanna be with me too/’Cause I’ma stay through it all/So jump then fall,” she sings.

Taylor told MTV News that she was really feeling the track. “It’s really bouncy and happy and lovey. It’s got this really cool banjo part that’s, like, bouncy and… I don’t know, it just has a really good feel-good vibe to me,” she said. It sure does.
