Tom Grennan in hospital after unprovoked attack and robbery in New York

Singer-songwriter Tom Grennan is recovering in a New York hospital following an "unprovoked attack and robbery", his agent said.

The 26-year-old sustained severe injuries in the violent incident which include a ruptured ear, torn eardrum and an issue with his previously fractured jaw.

The incident occurred outside a bar in Manhattan during the early hours of Thursday morning (April 21) after the Bedford-born singer's New York show, according to his management.

The Little Bit Of Love singer had played a gig at the Bowery Ballroom immediately before the incident took place.

A statement posted on his Twitter account on Thursday evening said: "In the early hours of this morning after Tom's New York show he was the victim of an unprovoked attack and robbery outside a bar in Manhattan.

"Tom is currently in hospital being assessed by doctors for his injuries which include a ruptured ear, torn eardrum and issue with his previously fractured jaw.

"Despite this Tom is in good spirits but needs to temporarily recuperate whilst doctors assess his ability to continue with his touring."

Tom's Washington tour date, due to take place on Friday (April 22) has been postponed. His management said they would "update on future shows should changes need to be made".

The statement added: "We wish to thank Tom's incredible US fans for their support and understanding."

Tom had earlier uploaded pictures and videos to social media documenting his time in New York.

Alongside pictures of him standing in the street wearing sunglasses and another of him performing an intimate gig, he tweeted: "The big apple, you lot are magic."

He wrote on his Instagram story: "Great to meet you all afterwards! Thanks so much to everyone who came out."
