A Place in the Sun couple say they’ll be ‘homeless’ unless Jonnie Irwin finds them a home

A Place in the Sun: Couple say they will be 'homeless' soon

A Place in The Sun presenter Jonnie Irwin was on hand to help Rachel and Miguel buy a permanent home in Orihuela Costa, Spain earlier this week and Channel 4 viewers saw the couple explain their desperate situation. With dreams of running their own Bed & Breakfast business, Rachel explained how they had already sold their house in the UK and would be made “homeless” unless Jonnie managed to find them their dream property in Spain.

With a 10 mile stretch of beautiful Mediterranean coastline, Orihuela Costa is one of the least developed areas in south east Spain.

The World Health Organisation also recommends it as having one of the most equitable climates in the world – averaging 325 sunny days each year – so it’s no surprise why Rachel and Miguel want to live there.

But Jonnie had a real challenge on his hands trying to find them the best property for the amount of money they had.

Rachel and Miguel were looking for a three-bed, two-bath house which offered plenty of space for their dogs.

“Tell me your budget,” Jonnie asked and Rachel said: “It’s around about £170,000.”

Shocked by the price tag, the presenter replied: “What you’re after, is probably more than your budget, so I need to find out where your compromises lie.”

“We’re actually due to be homeless very soon,” she continued.

Those watching at home saw amazement flash across Jonnie’s face as he asked: “What?”

“In 12 days time, we’re moving out of our house having sold it and we haven’t actually got a property to live in at the moment,” the guest explained.

Sarcastically, Jonnie said: “Great! So the pressure is well and truly on. Let’s find you a house before you become homeless.”

Jonnie set about showing the couple five potential properties.

The first was a three-bed villa in Mil Palmeras, on a complex of 124 townhouses and apartments and it could’ve been the couples for £161,304.

It offered a courtyard garden with a covered outside dining area and south-facing terrace.

Fortunately, the property came fully furnished and was a 15 minute walk from a wide sandy beach and a little high street which was packed with bars and cafes.

The second house was another three-bed villa in Pinar de Campoverde available for £173,870, and Rachel and Miguel were impressed with the modern detached villa which had a courtyard garden, upstairs terrace and its own private pool.

Jonnie upped his game for the third viewing, which was a four-bed villa in Cuidad Quesada.

Those watching at home saw the couple take a closer look at the detached villa which had its own private pool and lots of outside sp

It was priced at £155,652 but was a 15 minute drive from the nearest beach.

The penultimate villa was a single-storey, detached villa in Hondon Villa which offered gorgeous mountain views.

It was also sold fully furnished and also had a large garden and private pool, valued at £162,522.

The final house was a three-bed apartment in Torre de la Horadada for £173,870.

While the property didn’t offer as much as the other four, the location was incredible – a choice of eight beaches along a 3km stretch of coast was on their doorstep.

A Place In The Sun airs weekday afternoons on Channel 4.
