Katy Perry consoles contestant after she gets upset during apology
American Idol has confirmed that two music legends will be joining the panel amid calls for judges to be axed.
Katy Perry and Lionel Richie have been the target of some online attacks from fans due to their unpopular opinions and critiques during some of the series’ recent showings.
Viewers will see two new faces joining judge Luke Bryan later this month, while Katy and Lionel are away to perform at King Charles III’s Coronation on May 7.
The country singer previously teased the replacements, telling ET they were “big names”, who would take the place of the original judges, but he remained tight-lipped about other details.
And now those “big name” stars have been revealed ahead of this weekend’s show, according to Deadline.
Singer and songwriters Alanis Morissette and Ed Sheeran will serve as mentors to the remaining contestants, as they battle it out to become America’s next big superstar.
Both guest judges will take the stage themselves to show off their own talent, with the British pop icon set to debut his new single too.
According to ABC, Katy and Lionel will pop in on the Top 10 and viewers from Windsor Castle in England while they’re away.
The pair’s co-judge, Luke, told ET: “It’s big time. It’s big time. The people that we have filling in, contestants have used their songs many, many times. A lot more than mine!”

American Idol viewers are eager to see fresh faces on the judges’ panel as many have grown tired of the current star judges, with Katy mostly being in the firing line.
The Firework singer has been called out by fans over her treatment of the show’s contestants this season, leading fans to demand that she should be axed from the hit ABC talent show.
One incident during the show that aired on April 23, sparked outrage for Katy’s “rude” reaction to one of the show’s contestants, who had progressed through the competition following the live vote.
The contestant, Wé Ani, successfully progressed to the next round and made it to the prestigious Top 20, however, it appeared the Teenage Dream singer wasn’t too happy about it.
Despite her co-judges giving Wé excellent feedback, Katy began: “Wé, oh my god, I’m just so shook right now.
“First of all, shook by the results, and I’m also shook by that song is so dramatic, there’s so much drama going through my body right now I need a nap.”
The star never gave Wé any specific feedback or praise for her performance but instead took the opportunity to tell audiences about the importance of voting.
She continued: “But the truth is, America, you guys have the votes. You’re the ones voting,” which didn’t sit well with fans.
American Idol airs on ABC in the US.
