The Chase was back and today, Anne Hegerty was in the quizzer’s hot seat. Joining Bradley Walsh in the ITV studio was another four hopeful contestants and before the game had even begun Alan found himself in hot water with The Governess thanks to the host winding the situation up.

Alan, Kiera, Sue and Gary were today’s contestants and Alan managed to answer six questions correctly and he was up first to face Anne.

When Bradley asked which Chaser Alan would like to face he said: “My favourite one is Shaun, the Chaser.”

“Shaun the Chaser? Oh yes, what a coincidence he is on the show,” the host joked.

“So he’s my favourite because he is so composed and so clinical. But I don’t want to play him for that reason,” Alan revealed.

Those watching at home heard Bradley comment: “Oh right, make your mind up, I’ve got to get off.”

“The only chance I’ve got if I stumble a bit, so Mark or Anne,” Alan finally said.

Turning to the camera, Bradley added: “Time to bring on the Chaser! Here she comes, the queen of quiz herself, it’s frosty knickers Anne Hergerty.”

“Hello Alan, I can see why you don’t want an automatic, you went thorough the gears rather well there!” Anne mentioned.

It was then time for her to put the offers on the table and joining his £6,000 was a low offer of £1,000 and a high offer of £26,000.

Alan decided to stick with his winnings and Anne said: “You did imply that you thought I might be one of the easier Chasers to beat.”

“I didn’t say that, did I say that?” Alan backtracked and Bradley confirmed: “Yes you did.”

“You kind of did,” Anne added and Bradley stirred the pot: “In fact, what you said is ‘The Governess is useless’ – you said it, it’s on record now.

“In fact, you said she is ‘rubbish, totally rubbish, can’t quiz for toffee’ is what you said!”

“I’m regretting it now,” the contestant replied and Bradley finished: “I bet.”

Those watching at home weren’t impressed with Alan’s remark and took to Twitter to comment.

One said: “I’m pleased that it’s Anne, she’s one of my favourite Chasers. She ain’t easy though Alan!”

“Anne rarely ever stumbles!” A second chimed.

Alan made it back to the team, but Kiera, who also managed £6,000 in her cash builder was knocked out of the game.

As was Sue who also managed six questions correctly.

Final player Gary accumulated £4,000 and he decided to take a risk and chose Anne’s offer of £64,000.

He made it back to join Alan in the final Chase and together, they answered 11 questions bringing their head start to 13.

However, with Anne on top form, with 49 seconds to spare and one pushback, none executed, the team were caught and out.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
