Phillip Schofield: ‘It was consensual, but it was my fault’
BBC Breakfast viewers have slammed the programme’s rolling coverage of Phillip Schofield’s interview with BBC News which was aired throughout Friday morning.
Clips from the interview were played to BBC Breakfast viewers multiple times in the space of two hours, with Phillip telling Amol Rajan he’d “lost everything” and does not see a future in his career.
Phillip said his “career is over” after coming clean about his affair with a younger male This Morning colleague and quitting the ITV show after two decades.
The broadcaster said the affair was “a grave error” and admitted: “I shouldn’t have done it”.
Phillip looked exhausted as he told Amol he was “desperately sorry” and said he “should have known better”, despite insisting the affair was “consensual”.
A wave of BBC Breakfast viewers hit out about the ongoing coverage on Twitter.
Auld Bryan remarked: “#BBCbreakfast Schofield saturation this morning…I may have to switch off early and go and clean my toilet…”
@Befanona added: “@BBCBreakfast why is Philip Schofield getting so much air time? Switched off as NOT NEWS.”
@Ses1965 penned: “We’ve switched off. Good luck to those still watching #bbcbreakfast.”

Zoe Tuffen-Roberts shared: “@BBCBreakfast please don’t give #philipschofield airtime he is not news he is gossip! For him to say he knows how #carolineflack felt is disrespectful, his choices got him there, not the case for CF. Just stop!” (sic)
June Mitchell commented: “Not necessary to air this interview, this is gossip, not news. The country wants to know what the government is up to because that affects all of us. Schofield doesn’t.”

During Phillip’s BBC interview, he told Amol: “What am I going to do with my days?
“I see nothing ahead of me but blackness, sadness, regret, remorse, and guilt. I did something very wrong, and then I lied about it consistently.”
He insisted his This Morning co-host Holly Willoughby “did not know” anything about his affair. Holly is due to return to the show on Monday.
BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One between 6am and 9.15am.
