BGT hit with complaints as man who set himself on fire causes frenzy

  • Footage broadcast of a man setting himself on fire during Britain’s Got Talent got some fans so riled up they demanded that regulators step in and take action against the show.

The feedback came after American contestant Thomas Vu performed his bizarre Rubik’s Cube stunt, setting himself alight while solving the iconic puzzle.

The producers of the broadcast on ITV felt the need to include a warning not to try the stunt at home – but it seems that some viewers believed it shouldn’t have been performed on the set, either.

The judges watched in disbelief as Thomas completed the puzzle – and he secured the thumbs-up from Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Bruno Tonioli, and that means he’s got through to the next round.

However, there wasn’t quite as universal praise from some of the show’s viewers, some of whom took to social media to moan about the broadcast.

One furious viewer wrote: "Britain's Got Talent that was not a great idea putting the guy on the show setting him #onfire doing #rubikscube as kids will try recreate this by pouring lighter fluid on friends, highly irresponsible. @Ofcom hope you take note too as only a #muppet would do this act."

Another angry person tweeted: "Wonder how many complaints @Ofcom will get after this 'talent' – a man on fire whilst doing a rubix cube. #BGT"

And a third said: "YOU SHOULD NOT BE SHOWING THIS #BGT it’s a No no no no no @Ofcom @BGT."

In something of an understatement, 35-year-old Thomas introduced his stunt by saying: “I want to show the world that the Rubik’s Cube can be very interesting.”

And he did go on to win some fans with his amazing spectacle.

One Twitter user wrote: "Well done Thomas I was on the edge of my seat when the fire thing happened but I’m so glad you’re okay and that was such an unbelievable audition! :)."

And another said: "Bloody hell! I just couldn’t quite believe he was on fire. I love danger though! #BGT it’s a yes from me."

It's not the first time that BGT viewers have grumbled about the show recently.

Some fans are getting fed up with the show's format and have called on producers for a change. They have complained about the "scripted" moments from the audience, and some fans want to get rid of the audience commentary completely.
