BGTs Simon Cowell explains why he covered his ears during opening semi-finals

Simon Cowell has explained why he covered his ears during the opening of Britain's Got Talent's 2022 live semi-finals on Monday 30 May.

During the opening scenes, the cast of Moulin Rouge! The Musical put on a spectacular performance with even hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly joining in, although it resulted in Ant getting stuck in his chair.

After the scenes, Ant and Dec then went over to the judging panel as they asked Simon, 62, if he was happy the ITV show was back with a live audience.

To which he said: "I love it! By the way, I was doing this the whole was through the intro" as he put his hands over his ears.

Explaining the reason why, he added: "Because I don't know who is on tonight's show so I like to be surprised. So that might have looked a bit odd what I was doing and I can't look behind me but I'm very, very, very excited."

To which Dec joked: "Simon, nothing surprises us about you anymore!"

While Ant added: "It's a great show, Simon, it's a good way to find out just as it happens. Work it out as it happens!"

It comes after Amanda was left screaming and fleeing the Britain’s Got Talent 2022 live semi-finals on Monday night during The Witch's terrifying audition.

During the show, The Witch, who was later sent home, asked the judges Amanda, Simon, Alesha and David to pick out a message in each box which had a "premonition" and would conjure their "deepest, darkest fears".

After pulling out a series of messages, the last note said "rodent" as Amanda was asked to lift the box and upon opening was met with a real rat on the judging panel.

Left screaming over the reveal, Amanda fled the studio with Alesha as The Witch scooped up the animal and started chasing Amanda, saying: "What's the matter Amanda? Rat got your tongue!"

After the act had finished performing, it went back to the empty judging panel with only Simon and David still sitting as the latter picked up Alesha's heel, revealing she had left it while running away.

Elsewhere, Britain's Got Talent fans think they have worked out The Witch's identity during Monday's live semi-finals.

Britain's Got Talent continues every night this week at 8pm on ITV.
