Fans of the show The Flight Attendant were ecstatic to hear that the HBO Max series received numerous Emmy nods for Best Comedy Actress and Best Comedy Series. The nominations were a huge win already for star and executive producer Kaley Cuoco as this was the first live-action project she optioned with her project company Yes, Norman. The actress is best known for starring as Penny on CBS’ hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory.
Based on the novel of the same name by Chris Bohjalian, the HBO Max series The Flight Attendant was renewed for a second season earlier this year.
Executive producing the show as well, Kaley stars as Cassie Bowden, a hard-partying flight attendant.
The storyline follows Cassie as she scrambles to put the pieces together after she wakes up in a Bangkok hotel room with a dead passenger lying next to her.
The series has been a hit and Cuoco recently detailed her shock at the nine Emmy nominations the show received.
She told Gold Derby: “I’ve never watched the announcements before, I never thought I’d be a part of them.
“I’m a TV girl so to get that one [Emmy] my heart just… I was so overwhelmed,” she continued.
“And then to see the show get it [a nomination] and to see Rosie [Perez] get it, it made me feel like ‘Oh my god, they’re not just seeing me, they’re seeing the whole show’.”
“That’s what you hope for because I was going down with the ship one way or another,” the actress joked.
The star also explained that she had been with her team since she was 14 years old and, after the nominations, told them: “I told my team, don’t forget how this feels because we don’t know when it’ll happen again.
“I don’t assume we’ll be here again so just enjoy it.”
After spending 12 years on The Big Bang Theory, Cuoco was used to being in an award-worthy show but she never gained a nomination for her portrayal of Penny.
The actress also joked about how The Flight Attendant began life.
She said: “It was so cheesy but I was scrolling through Amazon for books and I saw The Flight Attendant.
“I got this chill and I immediately called my attorney.”
She also explained that Yes, Norman Productions wasn’t yet a company and that she created the production house so she could option and create The Flight Attendant for HBO Max.
However, she revealed that she wasn’t on the hunt for anything particular after The Big Bang Theory, she just “follows her heart” with her chosen projects.
Though she was worried that if she didn’t produce the series herself that no one would hire her to portray Cassie as she is such a complex character.
Reading the book, she thought: “This would be an actor’s dream. I mean, the girl is so messed up yet so loveable.
“I felt like I needed to take this one on my own,” the star remarked.
Speaking at the Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event earlier this year, Cuoco teased fans with some hints about what can be expected for season two.
“I think we are going to be adding that slight CIA aspect on the side but, as you heard, Cassie moves to California, so Cassie moves to LA first year sober.
“She makes all the wrong decisions, and what you’re not supposed to do when you become sober,” she continued.
“She’s going to learn very quickly that it’s not as easy as she thought.”
The Flight Attendant season one is available to watch on NOW TV.
