Bill & Ted Face The Music reviews are out -an excellent adventure or just bogus?

Bill & Ted: Face The Music is nearly here – and thankfully, it seems like it will truly be an excellent adventure.

The reviews are in for the third installment of the Bill & Ted franchise, and while not every one is positive, the vast majority of them have branded this sequel totally bodacious.

The Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter comedy has been called ‘delightfully dumb’, ‘a blissed out balloon of nostalgia’, and an ‘optimistic romp’, with less then glowing reviews still calling it ‘reasonably fun’ and ‘happy yet hapless’.

Considering it’s the first installment of the franchise in 29 years, we reckon that’s a pretty good outcome for the cult classic.

Variety

‘The film is weightless and super-goofy — a blissed-out air balloon of nostalgia. It zips right along, it makes you smile and chortle, it’s a surprisingly sweet-spirited love story (about Bill and Ted trying to live up to their marriages — though the real love story is, of course, the one that takes place between the two of them), and it’s a better tribute to the one-world utopian power of classic rock than Yesterday was.’

Forbes

‘It is a spirited, upbeat and optimistic romp, remembering that Bill and Ted are excessively nice and (when the situation requires) not as dumb as they appear. It is as surprisingly good as Bad Boys For Life and continues Keanu Reeves’ winning streak with sequels. I don’t know if the world needed another Bill & Ted movie, but this is a surprisingly good one.’

CNN

‘Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter party on in Bill & Ted Face the Music, another adventure in nostalgia that nobody really needed and yet, if not excellent, manages to be good-hearted and reasonably fun.’

USA Today

‘If there’s proof time travel exists, it’s that the creators of 1989’s Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure have found a way to again harness that same goofball magic in a very bogus 2020.’

AV Club

‘While the high stakes couldn’t be higher, the film simply takes too long to find its focus. It’s not the most excellent of outcomes, but not a total bummer, either.’

Entertainment Weekly

‘Mostly, the joy comes from watching Reeves and Winter on screen, two holy fools just doing their best to bring light and love and non-heinous riffs — and remind the bleary-eyed citizens of 2020, perhaps, of a simpler, sweeter world gone by.’

RogerEbert.com

‘It’s a long-awaited sequel that doesn’t betray its beloved characters, and it doesn’t merely repeat what people loved about them in the first place. Most of all, it is a remarkably likeable comedy about two good guys still trying to find their place in the world that’s anchored by genuinely sweet beliefs about the importance of friendship, honesty, and, most of all, music.’

Us Weekly

‘Happy yet hapless, the comedy is sort of like a high school reunion: Good times in theory, but anticlimactic and disappointing once you actually show up.’

So far, the movie has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 79%.

Bill & Ted 3 comes 29 years after the second film Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, and our heroes are now married with teenage daughters.

However, they are forced to go on another journey as they are given 77 minutes by Kelly (Kristen Schaal), daughter of George Carlin’s time-travelling tour guide, to write a song that will unite the world and save it from temporal collapse.

So Bill and Ted decide to go into the future to plagiarise the song that future them will have already written, while their daughters Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea (Samara Weaving) head back in time to gather an awesome backing band.

Bill & Ted Face The Music is out now in the US, and is scheduled for UK release on September 23.
