Brandy Lands Lead Role in Netflix Holiday Movie

Netflix is already in production for some of their holiday films slated for release this year. Queens star Brandy is leading the way in one of the movies. The streaming giant made the announcement this week and Brandy couldn’t be more excited.

Brandy to lead 2022 Netflix holiday film

The Moesha star is set to make her Netflix debut and spread some Christmas cheer this holiday season. It also marks Brandy’s first Christmas film of her career.

Deadline reports that the film is a romantic comedy of sorts. Per a description of the film, it “centers on Jackie (Brandy), who every Christmas, without fail, sends a boastful holiday newsletter that makes her old college friend Charlotte (Graham) feel like a lump of coal. When a twist of fate lands Charlotte, her husband Rob (Biggs), and their family on Jackie’s and her husband Valentino’s (Cedeño) snowy doorstep just days before Christmas, Charlotte seizes the opportunity to prove her old friend’s “perfect” life can’t possibly be that perfect. But in her overzealous attempt to expose Jackie, Charlotte nearly ruins Christmas for both families and must team up with her old friend to put the pieces back together.”

The movie is being produced by Brad Krevoy, as well as Amanda Phillips, Eric Jarboe, Steve Berman, David Wulf. Shyer and Gallicano are also executive producers. Mary Lambert who directed the streaming giant’s 2021 hit, A Castle for Christmas, is also directing the movie. A release date has yet to be released.

The movie comes behind the holiday breakout success of ‘Single All the Way’

It’s no wonder that Netflix is already working on their holiday film lineup considering their first holiday rom-com shattered numbers last year. Single All the Way, which starred Philemon Chambers is also described as Netflix’s first gay rom-com with two gay leads, one of which was Black.

The film follows Peter (Michael Urie) an L.A. executive who has to head back home to New Hampshire for Christmas. Desperate to avoid being labeled as “the single one” another holiday season, he convinces his best friend Nick (Chambers) to join him for Christmas and pretend that they’re in a relationship after Nick’s own relationship flops. But when Peter’s mother (Kathy Najimy) sets him up on a blind date with her trainer James (Luke Macfarlane), chaos ensues. Nick and Peter discover their platonic friendship might be more.

‘Single All The Way’ star speaks on the importance of the movie

In an interview with Popculture.com, Chambers spoke on the barriers the movie broke. “You get to see what it’s like if people fully accept not only their kids, but their friends, people they may not even know,” he said.

Chambers added that the film is unprecedented in its themes and imagery. “I think we come from a society where a lot of it is judgment and not true acceptance. And this movie, it has so many layers of love, so many layers of representation, again, Black queer man playing a Black queer character,” he continued.

“And I mean, even the stereotypes that are not being played into, it’s just something that we have not seen,” he added. “I’ve never seen it growing up. And now that it’s being done, I feel like it is long overdue, but now that it’s here, I am glad that everybody can watch it. And I think that in itself, a lot of messages can be taken, but one that I want to stand out is just love, unconditional love, unconditional love.”
