Coronation Street and Emmerdale have both become staple television shows airing on Friday nights with millions of fans tuning in. However, it isn’t unusual for the ITV soaps to be cancelled and taken off the air when sporting events take place or if major awards ceremonies need to be broadcast. This is the reason why the weeknight serial dramas won’t be airing this evening as the network has decided to treat viewers to coverage of the next stage of the World Cup qualifiers.
Starting at 7pm, the television guides are showing Live International Football will be commencing, with England taking in Albania.
Sports commentator Mark Pougatch will be presenting the coverage for the evening, with Ian Wright, Roy Keane and Jermain Defoe analysing the game.
Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon will be offering commentary on the 90-minute game which is a Group I match to determine who will progress through to the next stage of the competition.
The finals will be taking place in Qatar next year and each country will be hoping they can secure a place in the latter stages of the tournament.
Kick-off will start at 7:45pm, with the coverage ending by 10pm, meaning it will take up the entire prime-time slot in the network’s schedule.
Even though kick-off doesn’t start until 7:45pm, analysis and the build-up to the game is why Emmerdale cannot slot into the evening’s schedule.
Coronation Street was not given an inning as the match would be taking place during its slot in the network’s billing for the night.
Friday evenings are when the Manchester-based soap tends to air an hour-long edition of the drama on the cobbles.
This usually means there is more time later in the evening for other shows to air, as when two episodes air in one night, it makes it more difficult for dramas such as Vera to get a look in.
However, fans are not missing out on any of the drama, despite the football forcing the soaps to cancel their Friday night episodes.
This is because the soap’s ensured all the episodes they had planned for this week actually aired earlier this week.
With regards to Coronation Street, an hour-long episode was broadcast on Tuesday, which is a very rare slot for the show to take so early in the week.
However, the network managed to slot it in between its usual Monday night and Wednesday night editions of the programme.
Therefore, fans of the Manchester-based soap have not missed out on any action from the cobbles for this week.
Over on Emmerdale, viewers haven’t missed out on any of the action happening in the Yorkshire-based village either.
The village-based soap managed to still air on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and even managed to air its usual double-bill on Thursday.
To ensure Friday’s episode was broadcast, the Yorkshire-based drama aired an hour-long instalment on Tuesday just before Coronation Street.
This meant soap fans were treated to two whole hours of drama from their favourite fictional programmes and next week’s drama can air with no catchups needed.
Viewers should expect more schedule changes in the next few weeks, however, as more sports coverage is going to be airing on ITV.
With Christmas and New Year just around the corner as well, fans will be treated to weekend instalments of their favourite shows.
With the soaps broadcasting their Friday night episodes earlier this week, fans took to Twitter to comment on the schedule changes.
As Coronation Street was able to air on Tuesday, viewers were quite pleased with the network’s surprise alteration.
Issac wrote on the social media platform: “Unusual for a Tuesday but I’m not complaining.”
“Coronation Street should be on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, I don’t get why it’s [only on] three days a week,” Niamh commented.
However, The Listening Post wasn’t too happy as they shared: “Has ITV ever considered that Coronation Street fans are not World Cup Qualifier fans?
“You only get the revenue from ITV1 but insult your customers by dumping regular shows! As if running cash cow ‘competitions’ all day wasn’t bad enough,” they continued.
Coronation Street and Emmerdale episodes are available to stream on the ITV Hub.
