CORONATION Street fans have broken down in tears after Leanne Battersby and Steve McDonald were told their son Oliver would die no matter what.
The parents – who are played by actors Jane Danson and Simon Gregson in the ITV soap – were left broken when mediation with the hospital ended with the doctors telling them that Oliver was too ill to move for any treatment.
“No parent wants to be told that there’s nothing we can do for their child,” Dr Howarth said.
And as Leanne and Steve blew up in a rage, they accused the doctors of trying to stop any specialists from visiting because it would embarrass them professionally.
Dr Howarth told them: “Oliver’s too ill. We couldn’t allow you to move him from the hospital. Not if your decision would cause suffering.”
Leanne and Steve stormed out vowing to sue the hospital but it was clear the ordeal had taken a toll on them.
“I know the doctors think I’m selfish and cruel but I can’t give up on,” Leanne sobbed to Nick at Oliver’s bedside.
But at the McDonald house, Steve and Tracy were having a furious row.
Tracy told him the doctors were right and that there was nothing to be done for Oliver.
“Oliver’s not going to get better,” she said.
“There’s going to be no improvement, no miracle. Make the most of your time with him but I’m not squandering Amy’s future on a court case you can’t win, shouldn’t win.”
Steve was horrified and walked out, but viewers were just heartbroken for him and Leanne.
One wrote: "Oliver's story is so heartbreaking #Corrie"
A second said: "Imagine knowing it’s only a matter of time that you’ve gotta lay your child to rest permanently. Some powerful scenes from @itvcorrie #Corrie"
Another added: "Aw, sad ending to #Corrie! Steve does love Oliver, but he could help himself & come to reason!"
