Rosie (played by Helen Flanagan) hasn’t been seen on the cobbles of Coronation Street for three years, as she left her loved ones behind to begin a new career in Japan. The beloved character has been mentioned on the odd occasion but she hasn’t made any physical or guest appearances on the ITV soap during her time away. Actress Helen, who plays the formidable Weatherfield resident, has revealed she is keen to step back into the role in the future, meaning there is a good chance her alter-ego will come back with a bang. However, it seems this could be to give the Manchester-based town a new lease of life, something her mother Sally (Sally Dynevor) could strongly oppose.

When she was living on the cobbles, Rosie never liked the traditional values Weatherfield held and she was always looking for the next best thing.

The wannabe celebrity always dreamed of living in cities like London and wanted to make a name for herself, which is how she landed her job in Japan.

Her relationship with her mother Sally was like any other mother-daughter rapport, with the stalwart trying to keep her eldest child on a leash.

Following recent episodes of the weeknight serial drama, viewers know the mother of two is championing a campaign to become a local councillor.

However, her plans for the local area could be derailed if she discovers one of her opponents in the race is actually Rosie.

At the moment, Sally believes Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) is her only rival in the running for councillor but she might have no idea Rosie is another contender.

Having enjoyed several years in Japan, the young woman could decide she wants to return home and put her mark on the old-fashioned town.

The only way to do this, though, would be to become part of the committee that make the decision about the future of Weatherfield.

Being a councillor would give her fundamental power to make the changes she wants and she could have known her mother would have been running for the same position.

But not wanting to make it seem they were in direct competition, she could use a different name so Sally would not know until the latter stages of the contest she was up against her daughter.

The door is left open

Much like ruthless businessman Ray Crosby (Mark Frost), Rosie could decide she wants to modernise the area and build luxury apartments on the cobbles.

This would include tearing down establishments such as the Underworld Factory to make room for the new development she wants to be in charge of.

The residents of Weatherfield united in their fight against Ray but with the council having already opposed one set of plans, they could be hesitant to do it again.

With such a young mind behind the development, too, they could agree to the plans as they think she would have the right mindset to keep the values of tradition whilst bringing a fresh perspective to the area.

Will Rosie really be able to destroy the cobbles with her newfound power or will Sally make sure she beats her to take the crown of councillor for herself?

In a recent interview, actress and former I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! star Helen spoke about her chances of making a comeback.

Helen left in 2018 as she went on maternity leave but hasn’t yet returned, which sparked panic with viewers she would never return.

However, she seems to have shut down these reports as the soap star said: “I would really love to do some theatre.

“I really want to focus back on my acting. I probably will go back to Coronation Street at some point, and I’d love to do a drama.”

Responding directly to the rumours she had quit, the actress replied: “I honestly don’t know where these stories come from. I’ve never said that. The door is left open.”

She confirmed to OK! Magazine she wouldn’t go back just yet as since she has been away, she has also given birth to another child.

As son Charlie has just turned one, she said she would like to continue to care for him before returning to the show in the future.

With the character is still alive in the world of Coronation Street, there has always been the chance for her to return at some point.

But writers like to curate the perfect return storylines for former characters who are going to make a comeback and cause drama on the cobbles.

It’s likely they would want Rosie to have an explosive return so will a rivalry with her mother be the perfect plot line?

Taking to Twitter, viewers have been sharing their thoughts on the beloved character making a comeback and are eager to see her back on the cobbles.

Coronation Street Blog commented: “Anyone else want Rosie Webster to return now Kev’s remarried and find out she’s got Abi as her step-mum? Come on #Corrie, make it happen.”

Chadderbox added: “I just want Rosie back… #Corrie.”

David shared: “Poor Kev, it’s not his fault he’s gone grey. It’s that Sally and Rosie who put him through years of stress #Corrie.”

“Rosie is one of the few characters that can pull off comedy well. Hope she returns. #corrie,” TV Prattle wrote on the social media platform.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
