Coronation Street Jacob star defends co-star sister as fans ‘hate’ villain Lydia

Coronation Street star Jack James Ryan has rushed to defend his co-star sister Rebecca Ryan, after admitting she gets "hate" from soap fans.

Jack, best known for playing ex-drug dealer Jacob Hay on the ITV cobbles, knows what it’s like to get flack for his character after leading Simon Barlow down the wrong path last year.

But with his sister Rebecca currently appearing as the villainous Lydia Chambers – who is intent on destroying Adam and Sarah’s marriage – Jack said she has been "killing it" on the soap.

Since arriving on the cobbles, it has been revealed that Lydia is set on getting revenge after Adam forgot a romance he’d had with her back at university – and now she is looking to get the solicitor arrested and destroy his business.

On a candid Q&A posted to Instagram, Jack leapt to his sister’s defence, as one fan asked what it is like to work with his sister.

The star responded: "An absolute dream come true, we’re super close outside of work so it’s just like getting to work with your best mate.

"Side note: I’m so proud of her, she’s been killing it on Corrie! I know first hand how hard it is for the fans to get behind the villains but she deserves all the love!!!"

He added: "If you hate Lydia then you know Rebecca is doing an incredible job. She couldn’t be any less like her character in real life, she is a literal angel."

He also shared an adorable throwback snap of himself, his sister Rebecca and brother – and fellow actor Charlie – alongside another relative.

One fan asked: "When did you know you wanted to be an actor? When did it all click?"

As Jack responded: "LOOK AT US!!! I’ve known I wanted to be an actor from a really young age. Both my brother and sister are actors and I grew up watching them on stage and screen and it was so inspiring.

"So, basically I just copied them!" he added cheekily, tagging both family members in his sweet post.

It comes after Rebecca told Daily Star that she’s desperate for a scene starring her brother in Corrie.

She said: "We've not managed to have any scenes together unfortunately.

"I was thinking, 'Could we not just have one where I’m in the background of one of his scenes, just walking past?' – but no we’ve not managed to get one together yet, which is such a shame!"

Rebecca added: "We’ve had only very few days [where we’ve both been in], but every now and again we are.

"Sometimes if we’re both in, I’ll either come in a bit earlier if he’s in or a bit later and take him home – just so we have a bit of time together on the set. It’s great when we’re in at the same time, it’s fantastic!"
