Chris Gascoyne is to leave his Coronation Street role of Peter Barlow later this year, in order to ‘explore other roles.’
Having first appeared as the character in 2000, Chris’ latest stint has been across seven years since 2016.
Before that, he took extended time away from the cobbles, which is similar to the case here.
The actor has confirmed to Metro.co.uk that Peter Barlow ‘is very close to his heart,’ with a Coronation Street spokesperson confirming that the door is ‘left open.’
There is no set return date for Chris, however it is being viewed as an extended break.
The storyline which will see him depart the show is yet to be confirmed but we have been told that there is plenty of story to come, with plenty of twists yet to play out.
Recently, Metro.co.uk confirmed Chris has been announced as Captain Hook in a new version of Peter Pan.
Running across the Christmas and New Year period at The Alban Arena, the show boasts a ‘star-studded’ cast, as well as ‘stunning sets and dazzling costumes’.
Over the years, the actor has been central to huge plots, including recurring alcoholism, struggling to parent Simon Barlow, an on/off feud with dad Ken and a turbulent but passionate relationship with Carla Connor (Alison King).
This year, he has been concerned that Carla could relapse in her struggle with mental health, after she exhibited worrying and manic behaviour.
However, little do they both know that serial killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) has been spiking the factory queen with LSD.
It comes amid his plot to try and take ownership of Underworld, something which hasn’t gone too well for him so far.
At the moment, Carla remains in the dark about being targeted and drugged, but this won’t stay secret forever.
Peter is bound to react explosively when the truth is exposed, which will lead to an inevitable showdown with the murderer.
