Coronation Street’s Claire Sweeney tributes ‘fantastic’ co-star Maureen Lipman

Maureen Lipman teases return for Evelyn Plummer’s daughter

Claire Sweeney will make her Coronation Street debut at the end of June as Cassie, Evelyn Plummer’s (played by Maureen Lipman) estranged daughter.

Although fans of the ITV soap will know Evelyn’s been keeping Cassie a secret as she’s told her grandson Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) his biological mother is dead.

With the relationship between Evelyn and Cassie complicated, there’s plenty of drama expected ahead.

Speaking to Express.co.uk and other media organisations about filming with her on-screen mum, actress Claire Sweeney had nothing but praise.

She said: “Working with Maureen, she’s just like a masterclass. She’s so fantastic.

“I’m just looking forward to doing more stuff with her as with Alan. When I did my screen test with Alan, what a wonderful actor he is as well.

“I’m surrounded by great people.”

In the soap, Tyrone grew up believing his mum was Jackie (Margi Clarke) before an investigation in 2018 put him in contact with his grandmother Evelyn for the first time.

With his real mother battling a drug addiction, Evelyn didn’t believe she would be capable of looking after Tyrone so she abandoned him at a police station where he was found by Jackie.

However, as Cassie decides it’s time to reconnect with her family, there’s heartbreak ahead as Tyrone is faced with the truth that his grandmother has lied to him all these years.

Touching on how the arrival of Cassie will rock the family, Claire continued: “His grandma’s been lying to him and it’s a whole scenario about to unfold before our eyes.

“So, Evelyn wants Cassie out of the way, also I suppose she loves Tyrone and the children.

“She wants to protect them because she knows Cassie is a loose cannon. She wants to protect them and keep them in a happy bubble.”
