CORONATION Street’s Sue Nicholls has revealed she recently had to be written out of the soap after falling over in the dark and breaking her collarbone.
The 75-year-old, who has played hairdresser Audrey Roberts on the soap since 1979, has been noticeably absent recently after being forced to undergo an operation following the incident in June.
Explaining what happened, she told the Mirror: “I live in a tiny flat and Mark goes to bed much earlier than me.
“I was creeping around in the dark after taking my face off at about 11 o’clock and sat on the side of the bed.
“But I missed the bed and fell over. I had to have an operation, be written out of some scenes and take time off – which I hate doing as I don’t like letting people down. But everyone was so lovely.”
The actress also revealed she has no plans to retire any time soon and will continue as long as she’s asked.
She said: "If they’ll have me, I'd love to be here in 10 years' time because I like playing her. There's lots to achieve yet, so if I get the sack I'll lock myself in Audrey's salon and refuse to leave."
Audrey is the the mother of Gail Platt and grandmother of Sarah-Louise and David Platt and Nick Tisley.
Shortly before her accident Sue was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award at the soap awards.
Accepting the gong, she said: “I’ve never planned anything in my life, work-wise. I just took the jobs that came and that was lovely.
“There are so many people who I would love to thank, but I can’t because it’s bad enough all my gorgeous people there.
“But to go back 40 years we’d still be here in two hours. So I just want to thank not just the actors… I just love it so much.
“I get on better in the Weatherfield world than I do in the real world, to be honest. I want to thank all the studio people. I’m stuttering because I’m so nervous.”
