Netflix has dropped popular police drama series Criminal UK this week. The show consists of a series of standalone interrogation stories involving a group of police officers who are trying to establish innocence or guilt against the clock. Express.co.uk has the lowdown on the new series of Criminal UK.
How many episodes are in Criminal season 2?
Criminal UK season two was released on Netflix globally today (Wednesday, September 16), nearly a year after the first outing.
There is a total of four episodes in the new series, which were all available in one go – one more than the first run.
Here is a list of episode titles for Criminal season 2:
- Episode 1. Julia
- Episode 2. Alex
- Episode 3. Danielle
- Episode 4. Sandeep
Each instalment is named after the suspect facing a grilling from the police team.
This year has an equally starry cast of guest actors taking to the hot seat as they come under fire for various misdeeds.
Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington, acclaimed stage star Sophie Okonedo, Catastrophe’s Sharon Horgan and Kunal Nayyar from The Big Bang Theory all take on roles of the accused.
There are also more guest stars playing the solicitors to the suspects including Rakhee Thakrar, Amanda Drew, Jyuddah Jaymes and Annette Badland.
The cast playing the detectives will be reprising their roles, which means Katherine Kelly, Lee Ingleby, Mark Stanley, Rochenda Sandall and Shubham Saraf are returning.
Criminal sees a fresh set of cases including one in which an arrogant businessman is quizzed about rape allegations made against him by a female colleague.
Another story sees an interview with a convicted killer’s wife taken an unexpected turn, which could land the team in legal hot water.
A third case follows the team’s efforts to try and take down the head of website who exposes sexual predators, putting them in a moral quandary.
Finally, one episode is going to be focusing on a convicted killer hoping to bargain with the team, which will see them call on a disgraced former colleague for help.
Season one of Criminal came out in 2019 and was something of a TV experiment with four international versions of the show including a French, German and Spanish series alongside the British one.
The anthology series owes a large debt to the now famous interrogations featured in Line of Duty, which have become a hallmark of the show and sees much of the drama hinging on these lengthy interviews scenes.
Criminal’s first outing featured appearances from David Tennant, Hayley Atwell and Youssef Kerkour.
The UK edition of Criminal was created by George Kay and Jim Field Smith.
Speaking to Digital Spy about casting such impressive and high profile names for season one, Smith told the outlet in 2019: “We were able to attract the right talent here not just because of the strength of the scripts, but because these opportunities don’t come along very often.
“As filmmakers, as actors, you’re in a really intense setting, not bouncing around all over the place.
“I think that’s why the actors enjoyed the experience of making it, because it’s as close to a pure acting experience as you get.
“Normally on a TV drama you’re breaking across multiple days – this was closest to a theatrical play experience.”
Many viewers are likely to binge through the four new episodes and depending on the success of the second outing, a third could follow.
