DI Jack Mooney (played by Ardal O’Hanlon) has solved a host of weird and wonderful mysteries on the island as part of the Saint Marie police force. The lead detective is known for spotting a small details that may seem irrelevant at first but often blows the case wide open. Despite his love of solving murders, the Death In Paradise character will leave the island in season nine and BBC viewers, at the moment, are in the dark as to why he makes this huge decision.
After the death of his wife, Jack viewed Saint Marie as the perfect chance to start over with his daughter Siobhan (ACTOR NAME).
Jack gets on well with the rest of the team and his kooky charm often leads to his colleagues wondering what he’s got up to as he solves a particular case.
Death In Paradise confirmed Jack would be departing this season making way for DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little) to arrive halfway through the series.
Speaking to press including Express.co.uk, Ardal O’Hanlon explained why his character decides it’s time to leave the island.

Ardal began: “He’s in a good place in his life at this point.
“He’s now kind of getting over his grief for his former wife and he has his daughter but he is still a lonely guy.”
The actor explains Jack love his team and the island but he has come to a point in his life when he’s ready to move on.
“Really, I think, he loves the island and he likes his team,” he continued.
“And he’s very focused on the murder mysteries so he’s got plenty to carry him through the day but I think he’s coming to terms with a lot of things in his life.
“I think the island has been a great help to him in terms of the healing process.”
Death In Paradise fans have speculated Jack’s departure will be linked to potential new love interest, Anna (Nina Wadia).
Anna was introduced in the first instalment of the ninth series as a witness to a murder on New Year’s Eve.

Ardal explained Jack was “instantly taken with [Anna]” and even musters the courage to invite her along to a dance class.
“He meets this character called Anna who’s a witness in one of the murders on New Year’s Eve,” he explained.
“She sees a man wearing a devil mask and she reports that to the police.
“Jack is instantly taken with it but not in an obviously romantic way, he just likes her.

“She’s a fun kind lively character and he invites her to his dance classes and they hit it off and become friends more than anything.”
When asked if his love interest is the reason behind Jack’s departure, Ardal remained tightlipped.
The Death In Paradise star was asked if fans will get a glimpse of Jack’s romantic side before he leaves.
“Yeah there is there is a touch of that,” Ardal confirmed. “But that’s not necessarily the reason why he leaves.”
Death in Paradise returns to BBC One on Thursday at 9pm.
