Death in Paradise’s Jack Mooney heartbroken as Nina Wadia teases difficult romance

Nina first appeared in Death in Paradise earlier this month as Anna, DI Jack’s (played by Ardal O’Hanlon) latest romantic interest. Now she has spoken about her character’s “instant” attraction to Jack and how their relationship affects the show’s dynamics, as well as how it might contribute to Jack packing up his files on Saint-Marie.

Over the course of Death in Paradise there have been more funeral wreaths prepared than wedding bouquets.

Flowers on the island are more tied to sombre events than romantic gestures, but might that be about to change?

Former EastEnder actress and star of YouTube sci-fi series of Origin, Nina, has joined the hit drama series playing the adventurous Anna.

And Anna’s arrival may well be tied into the departure of DI Jack, as he bows out of Caribbean copping duties.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com Nina explained why Anna arrives on the island and is drawn to the copper.

Anna, Nina explained, is off finding herself: “She’s doing a year’s worth of travel because it’s on her bucket list, and she’s had a bit of a time with her ex-husband Mike, who was quite selfish.

“And so she thinks, ‘You know what, I don’t need this in my life, I’m just going to go and do what I’ve always wanted to do.’”

Even though she isn’t on the lookout for a relationship, fate has other ideas.

Nina revealed Anna’s attraction to Jack is “instant” adding: “And she literally flies out, and when she least expects to meet someone else, she sees Jack.

“And for her it’s quite instant, she kind of just knows that she likes him… for her it’s about finding herself first and foremost, but this is an interruption in what her plans were.”

Not that their budding romance is as dreamy as the island, as Nina called their relationship a “rollercoaster” and Anna might be part of why Jack decides to leave.

Nina said: “It’s a real rollercoaster. We don’t really want to give anything away, but she is part of the whole thing in a little way.”

Tim Key, executive producer of Death in Paradise, has also hinted Anna will be involved in Jack’s exit.

He related how Jack’s leaving story relates to how it started on the island: “I think it’s that thing of paying off the story we brought him in on, which is that he’d lost his wife, and where he was at in his life, and how he can move on.

“And obviously Nina’s character is a big part of that, and it’s very, it’s really lovely. It’s genuinely a really lovely story that I think the audience will be able to really, really go for.”

Ardal has also spoken about how Jack will be affected by Anna.

He said how Jack is “taken” with Anna: “Jack is very taken with her for some reason. He doesn’t quite understand his feelings himself, I think.

“And he invites her to his dance classes, because naturally enough he’s taking dance classes.”

He feels their relationship is, perhaps at first, a companionship: “They strike up a friendship and it’s quite a warm, adult sort of friendship, both lonely people I think who kind of find each other. But that’s not necessarily the way the story goes.”

For how much longer will Jack remain on Saint-Marie before leaving, and will he leave with Anna?

Death in Paradise continues on BBC One on Thursday at 9pm.
