David Tennant and Catherine Tate have been confirmed to be returning to Doctor Who with a surprise announcement that has caused absolute mania online.
The former Tenth Doctor and fan-favourite companion Donna Noble will make their explosive return for the 60th-anniversary episode, the official Doctor Who website announced today.
Returning showrunner Russell T Davies, who was over the series during David and Catherine’s tenure in the rebooted show’s fourth series, teased the announcement by writing simply: ‘They’re back.’
But even as the rumour mill swirled as to who RTD might mean, nobody seemed willing to get their hopes up enough to imagine the DoctorDonna making their first appearance in 12 years.
And so, when a photograph of the reunited David and Catherine appeared on the official Doctor Who social media accounts, fans lost it completely – and who can blame them?
IS THAT MY GIRL DONNA?’ one fan screamed, while another described series four as ‘the best season of British television ever made,’ adding ‘we all won today.’
‘I would absolutely die for donna noble she’s my everything i miss her so much all i’ve ever needed was to see her again,’ one fan gushed.
‘I CAN’T COPE,’ another said, while one wrote simply: ‘David Tennant and Catherine Tate are back LADSSSSS!!!!!!!’
‘CATHERINE TATE and DAVID TENNANT!!! DREAMS DO COME TRUE,’ another blissful viewer said, while one admitted they were ‘losing it’.
Another wrote: ‘David Tenant and Catherine Tate back!??? AM I DREAMING.’
One particularly thrilled fan admitted they had ‘never actually been so happy to where I cried tears of joy… until today.’
A synopsis teasing their Doctor Who return mentioned Donna’s memory wipe to save her life, adding that the Doctor had ‘left her family with a warning: if ever she remembers, she will die.’
It adds: ‘But with the two coming face to face once more, the big question is, just what brings the Doctor and Donna back together?’
Doctor Who is far from the only time close friends Catherine and David have collaborated: they worked on a stage version of Much Ado About Nothing together in 2011, with David also cropping up several times on The Catherine Tate Show.
The announcement comes after Ncuti Gatwa was confirmed as the 14th Doctor.
He said at the time: ‘There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling.
‘A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.
‘This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.
‘I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.’
Doctor Who will return to BBC One this autumn.
