Dr Hilary predicts 'more restrictions' to come amid spike in Covid-19 cases

Dr Hilary suspects there may be ‘more restrictions’ to come in the coronavirus press conference this afternoon.

He said the country needs to ‘batten down the hatches’ as infections continue to spike.

The doctor added that the government needs to speak to people ‘in a way that we understand’ to make sure whatever rules are announced are followed.

On Wednesday’s Lorraine he spoke about the Covid-19 app, saying it is ‘by no means world-beating or good enough’.

‘However we have test and trace in parts, we have better treatements, we understand [Covid-19] better. If people are in hospital we know how to adjust their treatment, we’ve learned from the previous lockdown.

‘Having said that we are seeing more deaths, more hospitalisations and the number of people on ventilators doubled. So there is no room for complacency – we hoped we’d do better.

He went on: ‘I suspect we’ll hear tonight that numbers are rising, we need to batten down the the hatches, there may be some more restrictions.

‘But they need to explain it in a way that we understand we’re doing it for our sakes and not for them.

‘A lot of people are saying young people don’t get it so badly and are counting deaths, what we do know is people can have long Covid symptoms for months, no one wants that. We have a backlog of cancer treatments.

‘So it’s not about just Covid 19 and deaths, it’s about the whole thing.’

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be speaking later today in what will be the 100th coronavirus press conference, expected to air at 5pm.

He will be joined by chief medical officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty and chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance.

It comes as the UK recorded over 7000 cases of Covid-19 yesterday and a further 71 deaths, the highest since July 1.

Lorraine airs weekdays from 9am on ITV.
