Based on the long-running series by Robert Jordan, The Wheel of Time is finally coming to screens this Friday. Starring Gone Girl’s Rosamund Pike, the magical new series is poised to become a huge hit for Prime Video this year, and the Express has the latest from Daniel Henney on what to expect from the sprawling fantasy adaptation.

Breakout Korean-American star Daniel joined the series as Lan after shooting to international success with several appearances in major films and TV series over the years.

His latest role sends him on a perilous quest in a mysterious new world populated by magical women known as Aes Sedai.

One of these powerful individuals is Rosamund’s Moiraine, who is convinced Lan, or one of his companions, is destined to unite or destroy the world for good.

Daniel spoke to Express.co.uk about his experience working with the lead actress.

He recalled: “I think there were moments for all of us where we just had to come together and be like, ‘We’ve gotta get through it’.”

Adapting Jordan’s vast saga of books was no small undertaking, as each novel comprises some 700-1200 pages.

As a result, working on the fantasy series meant the cast formed close bonds.

Daniel explained: “The scenes are big, a lot of physical demands.”

“Working with Rosamund [Pike] has been a dream come true.

“She’s so talented but also makes you bring your game every single day, she’s not gonna let you slip up – she’s the real deal.”

Rosamund shot to fame as Bond villain Miranda Frost, and has since appeared in a number of high profile films, including Gone Girl, Jack Reacher and the recent black comedy I Care A Lot.

With The Wheel of Time, she has now taken on her first major television role since her Emmy-winning turn opposite Chris O’Dowd in comedy series State of the Union.

Moiraine’s fate beyond the first season is unknown, though she is expected to reprise her role as the series was renewed for a second season back in May this year.

Teasing more fantasy antics to come, Daniel confirmed he has already started work on one of the tricky action sequences taking place in the follow-up.

He recalled: “For season two, they had me on the back of these monsters called Trollocs, they’re like eight feet tall.

“[They said], ‘In this move you’re going to jump up onto its back, you’re gonna take your sword, you’re gonna stab it into his back, you’re gonna steer him like a car.”

“He’s gonna pull [and] you’re gonna roll forward with your sword, come out the roll and stab another one.

“I said, ‘You know, I think rolling with a real aluminium sword tucked under my armpit is not the best call’.”

In the books, Daniel’s character al’Lan Mandragoran is known as the greatest swordsman of the Third Age, so hopefully he manages to make it out of his scrape with a Trolloc alive.

The Wheel of Time season 1 premieres Friday, November 19 on Prime Video.
