EastEnders airs Janine's huge return scenes as she masquerades as a doctor

They say that good things come to those who wait, and that logic certainly applies to EastEnders fans, given that Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks) has at last made her highly-anticipated return.

No, this isn’t a joke. And no, it’s not a drill.

After seven very long years, Janine is back on our screens, and if our first impression is anything to go by, she’s as manipulative as ever!

The legendary soap super-bitch has been on the minds of many a Walford resident in recent weeks, following her daughter Scarlett’s (Tabitha Byron) return to the Square.

Tommy Moon (Sonny Kendall), who connected with Scarlett online, has been eager to get to know her – given that he thinks she’s his cousin.

Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace), however, was worried that this newfound loyalty to Scarlett could lead her son to discovering the truth about his parentage. In other words, she didn’t want him finding out that Alife (Shane Richie) isn’t his biological dad.

But the stalwart’s mind was elsewhere during tonight’s (September 6) outing of the soap, given that Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) had been arrested for his role in Ian Beale’s (Adam Woodyatt) attack.

For those who haven’t watched in a while, Kat is currently in a relationship with Phil. Yes, unfortunately that is also true.

Martin Fowler (James Bye) issued Kat with some advice, instructing her to prioritise her son over her beau.

Kat, thankfully, did just that, and after a long hard think, she decided to come clean to Tommy, telling him that Michael Moon was actually his father, thus making Scarlett his sister.

Tommy was taken aback by the discovery, but if anything, it made him all the more determined to help Scarlett, as he pleaded with Kat to attend the court hearing that would decide her fate.

Knowing how much this meant to her boy, Kat did just that, as she arrived at the court, where she came face-to-face with Scarlett once more.

‘You can tell the judge that I’ve done this before with my cousin Hayley for a year with her daughter,’ she told the social worker, making it quite clear that she wants to be Scarlett’s carer.

‘I’ve known her mum for a long time, and I could tell you some stories about her. Horror stories.

‘Trust me, this little girl is better off if she never sees her again.’

If only you knew, Kat.

Meanwhile, somewhere in London, Zack Hudson (James Farrar) waited in a doctor’s office with nephew Albie Watts, after promising Sharon (Letitia Dean) he’d take him to his appointment.

The sound of high heels echoing across the hall way could be heard, and it became clear that, after a lengthy wait, the doctor had arrived.

Little Albie was mesmerised, as was Zack when he set his sights on the doc, who aptly entered the room to The Arrival Of The Queen Of Sheba.

‘I thought you’d be older,’ said Zack, believing her to be Doctor Cole.

‘I’m Doctor Bernstein,’ replied the woman, with a devilish glint in her eye. ‘Judith Bernstein.’

Long-time EastEnders fans may have – at this point – worked out that the doctor was actually Janine in disguise, given that Judith Bernstein is an alias she’s used previously.

Janine Butcher is back!

And, unless she’s become a fully qualified as a doctor since the last time we saw her, it’s safe to say that she’s up to her old tricks once more!

‘I am so sorry I’m late,’ she added. ‘There’s always something keeping me away. But here I am!

‘Metre’s running! ‘Give me your worst.’

An entrance that will go down in history, no doubt. Pinch us, we’re dreaming!
