Emmerdale fans were left divided on Thursday, when Belle Dingle made the brave decision to admit the truth about her mental health to current flame Tom King.
Speaking to her boyfriend privately, Belle told Tom that she suffers from Schizophrenia and tried to explain how she had been sectioned in the past more than once and admitted to hospital after hearing and seeing things that weren’t there.
Worried about how he would respond, the young entrepreneur offered him an exit clause and admitted there would be no hard feelings if he wanted to walk away now, as she knew it was a lot to dump on someone.
After pouring out her heart, a stunned Tom looked on in shock before bafflingly getting up from his seat to make them both a cup of tea, in the hopes of relieving the tension.
Confused by the action, Belle was left fearing the worst as she continued to share more and more details about her diagnosis, including how she was in remission now and hadn’t suffered symptoms for over a year – something which was a huge milestone for her.
However, when Tom returned with the tea, he looked Belle straight in the eyes and kissed her, an act which wordlessly explained he was still fully committed to their newly rekindled relationship and accepted her as she was.
“You’re still Belle.” He stated, in a particularly poignant moment, before Belle herself admitted she wasn’t ashamed of who she was or the condition she suffers from – but did acknowledge it was hard work to live with.
Fans at home were unsure of what to think about Belle’s confession and how Tom reacted, with many fans quick to praise Belle for being so honest and open – but Tom’s reaction left much to be desired.
“Why can’t Tom deal with situations in a sensible way.. belle took courage to tell him about her mental health and he walked away!” Lamented one fan after Tom’s initial reaction.
A second fan agreed, adding: “Oh Belle love…..your pouring your little heart out to an emotionally unavailable bloke bent on revenge…”
A third fan then commented: "Unless Tom is up to something, it's nice to see him not reacting over dramatically like he has been since he returned about Belle's schizophrenia, he has been less annoying the last few days.”
Not everyone was so convinced by the sincerity of Tom’s acceptance however, with one fan even writing: “Well done Belle for being so honest with Tom . I just hope that he can be trusted because Belle is vulnerable and could have a massive setback if Tom has used her all along.”
Similar sentiments were echoed by another fan who added: “Tom is not good for Belle's mental health, not yet anyway…he's a wolf in sheep's clothing. Stay friends it's far less complicated for you.”
Tom and Belle only recently rekindled their relationship earlier this Spring, after Tom returned to the village after several years away.
Prior to his exit from the soap in 2013, Tom had originally planned to run away with Belle to start a new life.
Yet despite their lovestruck plans, he soon had a change of heart and instead fled the village alone by stealing Dan's camper van – leaving behind a devastated Belle.
Emmerdale continues weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV and ITVX
