Emmerdale star on why Faith keeps 'criminal' death plan a secret from children

As Faith Dingle (Sally Dexter) faces deteriorating health and the knowledge that she will die very soon on Emmerdale, she has started to put plans in place to end her own life when she feels the time is right.

Because she can’t face the prospect of dying alone, she has asked her daughter-in-law Moira (Natalie J. Robb) to be with her at the end, but has refused to give Moira any more details about what she’s planning to do or when.

‘When she begins to voice the idea out loud, she isn’t 100% certain about actually doing it,’ Sally Dexter told us. ‘She needs to speak to someone she loves and trusts, who won’t run round the village in hysterics telling everybody! She trusts Moira.’

While Moira has deep reservations about what Faith is planning to do, she understands her reasons and agrees not to tell Chas (Lucy Pargeter) and Cain (Jeff Hordley) what Faith has asked her to do.

According to Sally, there are two reasons why Faith insists this should only be between herself and Moira.

‘For one, she firmly believes they would do everything they could to prevent her carrying out her plan to quicken her own death,’ she says. ‘For another, if they knew about it, that knowledge could land them in a lot of trouble. It is illegal to assist someone to hasten their own death in this country. There is a penalty of imprisonment if found guilty.

‘Faith is already worried about the fallout of her death (natural or otherwise) on Chas and Cain. She already sees them at loggerheads and assumes it’s the stress of the situation. The thought of her children being criminalised for helping her would cause Faith untold anxiety and anguish, so she couldn’t let them know anything about it, for their sakes.’

She also feels huge responsibility towards Moira. ‘Though she knows she wouldn’t be asking Moira to actually assist her dying, she realises she cannot have any possibility of Moira being implicated either,’ Sally says.

‘And for that reason, even though Moira relents and agrees to be by her side; Faith decides to take control alone.’
