Every Single Theory We Have About 'Grey's Anatomy' Season 17

Grey’s Anatomy season 16 ended last week in one of the more standard Grey’s episodes of the last year. Richard was diagnosed and operated on, Amelia had her baby with the help of Bailey, and Teddy threw a grenade at her relationship with Owen. That leaves us with plenty of questions about next season, and there are theories to discuss, people.

Some of these are from my own brain, and others are from various fans on the internet. Read ’em and weep. Oh, and here’s a quick reminder.

Dear #GreysAnatomy fans, remember that filming stopped early. There are a lot of loose ends (amelias baby name, human trafficking story, etc) that had plans for the next few episodes that got cut short. @KristaVernoff isn’t leaving us hanging intentionally.

Richard will have an injury “relapse.”

This is purely my theory, but I can’t imagine this is the end of Richard’s health problems. There’s no way he’s just totally back to normal after this, especially when the show spent so much time on that plot this season. My guess is there will be further complications. And as for Catherine? It definitely feels like that couple ship has sailed.

The human trafficking story will come back.

Krista Vernoff, the Grey’s showrunner, made it clear on Twitter that the human trafficking storyline was something they wanted to revisit. Because they had to cut the season short, they didn’t get to. They might bring it back next season, though, which would give that story some much-needed airtime.

It breaks our hearts. That story was coming around in what would have been the next episode. Hopefully we can complete her story in season 17! https://t.co/eGwaBlDxNq

There will be at least one coronavirus episode.

This is going to be tricky, because by the time the show (hopefully) returns in the fall, people might not be ready to sit through a coronavirus episode. But it does feel like something the show can’t ignore, especially with their habit of ripping episode plots straight from the headlines. The other problem is that, narratively, you couldn’t do it in just one episode considering the ongoing nature of what’s happening. My guess is there will be at least one episode focused on a pandemic, but probably more.

We’ll find out Amelia’s baby name!

My prediction is Derek, TBH. I mean, it is a boy, and this show has a habit of having characters give their kids sentimental names.

There was a big story around naming the baby in what would have been the next episode. Sorry but you will have to wait for next season! 💜 https://t.co/eJFfR4nODQ

There will be at least one episode where Jo loses it about Alex.

She’s been handing this extremely well, no? The woman’s husband walked out on her! We’ve seen her get closer with Schmitt, but it doesn’t seem like there’s been any fallout from the fact that her marriage disintegrated. That’s gotta be in the next season, right?

The DeLuca situation will come to a head.

He’s obviously dealing with a LOT, and while it’s pretty impressive that he figured out Richard’s diagnosis, the way he did it proved he needs some serious help with whatever’s going on. It feels like they can’t draw out this plotline much longer, so my prediction is that we’ll finally get a resolution (like, a diagnosis and treatment plan) to DeLuca’s mental health stuff in the next season.

Teddy will figure her sh*t out.

Okay, I know this season really did a number on Teddy’s character, but I’ve been thinking about all the sacrifices she made to be with Owen. She loved him for years and she literally left her job in Germany to be with him and create a family. It seems really unlikely that this is just the end of that couple, even though she’s been cheating on him. My prediction is that she’ll figure stuff out next season and remember how much she cares about Owen. Whether Owen forgives her is another question. But it also looks like Tom isn’t going anywhere…

Who says he’s underrated? He is highly rated in my book! He’s a damn genius!!
