Fans Think They Know How 'This Is Us' Will End

It will be at least three seasons before This is Us ends, but fans think they’ve got the ending figured out already. With the way the timelines bounce around in the show, we’ve probably seen the ending and we just don’t realize it yet.

Thus far in the series, the show has many timelines. There’s the flashback timeline that covers Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) love story, marriage, and raising their three kids. There’s the “present” timeline with adult Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Kevin (Justin Hartley) dealing with their own lives and struggles. The current season introduced the future: Fans see sneak peeks of the future generation as adults.

What’s going on in ‘This Is Us’ now?

The most recent episode was called “Flip a Coin,” which Vulture playfully called “Untitled Hot Babysitter Pilot.” That’s a reference to the show that Kevin was shooting, and it turned out he really was kind of hoping it wouldn’t work out.

But it became “The Manny” and that was that. Laughing at this revelation was Cassidy, a new character played by an old favorite: Jennifer Morrison, formerly the savior of Once Upon a Time. Cassidy and Kevin appear to be growing closer, suggesting fan theories that she’ll be the mother of his child are true.

Meanwhile, this seems like a transitional time for Rebecca, who in this episode is still coping with Jack’s death. Inspired by Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) mom Carol (Phylicia Rashad), who was grieving her own husband, Rebecca makes a concerted effort to pick herself up, dust herself off and start all over again.

What are fans saying about the ‘This Is Us’ ending?

Reddit, that endless incubator for fan theories, is buzzing with ideas. Some of them not. Here’s an example of one that is most definitely not serious: “They just keep expanding it to where the family gets traced back to the beginning of man and forward to the end of time and there’s some parallel or some s—.”

And still another — well, probably not a fan — says, “They all die in a nuclear explosion” to which somebody else responds, “too realistic.”

On a more sobering note, one fan said that somehow Jack will be alive and he and Rebecca will reunite after she dies, sort of like that other Jack and Rose did in Titanic during the sequence at the very end when old Rose dreams about her younger years with Jack in the grand ballroom of the ship, with their embrace inspiring applause.

Another fan concurred, writing:

“I’m not quite on-board with Jack being alive (though I’d love to see it, I don’t think it would work well.) And ending with Jack and Rebecca reuniting would be pretty epic… maybe on her deathbed you see Rebecca staring off into the corner somewhere and she sees Jack. Her eyes light up for a second.

“Hey Bec. Let’s go home.”

The show started with Rebecca and Jack’s love story. The first major teaser was Jack’s death: How did he die? The season 3 finale featured a flash-forward where the Pearson family is congregating at Kevin’s home and Rebecca is on her deathbed.

Many fans suspect the finale has already been filmed and the show will end on Rebecca’s death. It would be a poetic ending, as Rebecca would finally be one with Jack after his untimely death.

Fans wouldn’t be too devastated, as the show hops around. So each character’s future can be thoroughly explored. While fans would seemingly end at Rebecca’s death, they can rest easy knowing the “happily ever after” of each character with flash-forward sequences.
