Dominic Toretto makes his way back to the big screen next month as the Vin Diesel-led movie franchise, Fast and Furious, continues with Fast 9. Eight years after the death of Vin’s friend and co-star, Paul Walker, his legendary character Brian O’Connor is making a comeback to the series for the first time since Furious 7.

Walker died on November 30, 2013 when the car he was in with close friend Roger Rodas spun out and hit a concrete lamp post in Santa Clarita, California.

Walker and Rodas both died at the scene.

At the time Walker hadn’t finished filming his parts for Furious 7, so his final moments in the movie were edited to show his character, Brian, retiring from being a criminal.

Now, director Lin has revealed why Walker’s likeness and character will be brought back to continue his story.

Lin was asked by Variety if, during the events of the film, Brian is off-screen looking after his kids.

The director replied: “The idea of Brian O’Connor still alive in this universe, it’s very impactful and it’s very important.

“When we talk about Fast 9, this is the first time for me creatively approaching it not as just the one film.”

Previously, Lin directed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth movies in the franchise: The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift; Fast & Furious; Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6.

Lin returns to the series for Fast 9 and has also signed on to finish the series with the currently untitled tenth and 11th films in the series.

He continued: “In the past, I’ve always felt like, we’re lucky enough to do one, let’s do everything we can.

“But Vin finally talked me into it, you know, when I came back, he’s like: ‘Well, let’s think about it as a final chapter.’ So Fast 9 is really the beginning of the final chapter of the saga.”

He added: “So in doing that I think there’s a lot of room to really place our characters, and Brian obviously is a big part of the universe still.”

Lin went on to talk about Walker’s image and legacy going forward.

He continued: “I want to always be very respectful and how we present [Walker]. I think that [in] Nine, you will feel the presence of Brian, for sure.”

The upcoming ninth movie also brings back Han Lue to the series.

Han (Sung Sang) was first introduced in The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift, before being killed off in a car crash.

The trailer for the new film shows Han alive and well, despite being caught in an exploding car.

It has since been revealed that Jason Statham’s character, Deckard Shaw, had something to do with Han’s death.

Speaking about Han returning, Statham recently announced: “They better bring me back, because I need to put out that fire. If he’s got any score to settle, it’s with me.”

Fast 9 is due out in cinemas on May 19, 2021.
