The first new Friends episode for 17 years will be broadcast on Thursday May 27 by the streaming service HBO Max. As well as including all six of the show’s main actors – David Schwimmer, 54, Jennifer Aniston, 52, Courteney Cox, 56, Lisa Kudrow, 57, Matt LeBlanc, 53, and Matthew Perry, 51 – there will be a stellar cast of celebrity guests, including David Beckham.
But the long-awaited reunion special will differ from the 10 series that ran from 1994 to 2004 in that the original line-up will appear as themselves instead of in character – as Ross (David), Rachel (Jennifer), Monica (Courteney), Phoebe (Lisa), Joey (Matt) and Chandler (Matthew).
Other guests include model Cindy Crawford, pop star Lady Gaga, TV’s James Corden, James Michael Tyler, who played Gunther in the show, Reese Witherspoon, who was Rachel’s sister, Tom Selleck, who appeared as Monica’s love interest, and model Cara Delevingne. A teaser video shared on social media yesterday showed the six original cast members walking arm-in-arm across a studio lot.
The video was accompanied by a down-tempo version of the sitcom’s theme, I’ll Be There for You by The Rembrandts.
It was captioned: “The One Where We Get to See Our Favorites Back Together Again.”
Courtney wrote on Instagram: “This kind of thing doesn’t happen every year, or even every 10, or 15 years. I feel so blessed to have had a chance to reunite with my Friends…and it was better than ever.”
David wrote: “Finally! Had a blast with the cast and a solid nap with LeBlanc.”
Jennifer added: “It’s official! The #FriendsReunion premieres May 27th on @HBOMax – could we BE any more excited?!” Meanwhile, Matt wrote: “So great to see you everyone.”
Friends repeats remain among the most popular shows on TV.
The first show, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, aired on NBC on September 22, 1994.
The series finale, on May 6, 2004, was watched by 52.5million American viewers, making it the most-watched television episode of the 2000s.
All the stars have since gone on to enjoy successful acting careers, although Jennifer recently revealed she was considering quitting to do interior design.
