'Gilmore Girls': 3 Reasons Lorelai Gilmore Should Have Ended Up With Christopher Hayden

Gilmore Girls fans largely agree that Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes were a perfect pair, but he’s not the only man Lorelai seriously dated. In fact, Lorelai had a long and somewhat tortured relationship with Christopher Hayden, Rory Gilmore’s father. While the duo didn’t end up together, there are a few reasons that he may have been a better match for Lorelai than Luke.

Lorelai and Christopher had a shared history

While it’s not highlighted a ton during the show’s seven-season run, Lorelai and Christopher have the makings of an amazing love story. They were high school sweethearts, who cared deeply for each other, but for a variety of reasons, could never manage to get on the same page. Their shared history, however, ensured they kept coming back to each other over and over again.

Luke and Lorelai, on the other hand, didn’t have that shared history. While their relationship seemed effortless, it also lacked the deep emotion that seemed tied to Lorelai and Christopher’s shared history. If their season 7 marriage had worked, their story would have been really sweet.

Lorelai and Christopher understood each other

While Luke and Lorelai shared a life in Stars Hollow, they came from vastly different upbringings, and it was obvious the pair had a hard time understanding each other because of it. On the other hand, Christopher seemed to understand Lorelai, the world she grew up in, and why she worked so hard to escape.

While Luke was a good guy, Christopher was leaps and bounds ahead of him in understanding Lorelai. He also fit better into Lorelai’s world and was a much neater fit with the Gilmores. In many ways, Christopher and Lorelai were the same, allowing them to understand each other perfectly. The same can’t be said for Luke.

Christopher shared Lorelai’s love of pop culture

Christopher and Lorelai had more in common than their shared experience and their history. The pair both loved pop culture. Of Lorelai’s serious boyfriends, he was the only one who could keep up with her endless supply of pop culture quips. He had plenty of his own, too.

Reddit users point out that the pair had a lot of sexual chemistry, too. It’s entirely possible that their shared interests and a similar sense of humor helped them connect on a deep level. That connection fueled the tension between them. While Luke and Lorelai had good chemistry initially, once they got together, that chemistry seemed to all but vanished.
