GMB presenters discuss extreme heat across the globe
Good Morning Britain meteorologist Laura Tobin issued a warning to viewers over the potential for the hottest-ever temperatures being reached across the globe, which led some viewers to accuse the show of spreading “fear”.
“The big giant map behind me is North America, and almost a third of North America – 113 million people – are in the grips of a heatwave,” Laura explained to viewers.
She continued: “Also, China had their hottest day recorded in their history yesterday.”
Host Richard Madeley added: “Putting the death into Death Valley, I think they’re saying there the temperatures can get up to 55 centigrade.”
“This week they could equal or break the highest temperature earth has ever recorded,” Laura went on.

However, as viewers began to respond to the coverage, some fumed the programme was simply spreading fear.
Twitter user @tomgilroy33 penned: “The last time it was recorded was 1913 was it reported as global warming then??”
@dude1889 wrote: “State Of Fear…… #GMB.” (sic)
@Reece3_ fumed: “It’s called summer,” while @tomgilroy33 added: “Another point is that it is far more widely reported now which could be used as a tool to spread fear and discontent among people all around the world.
“I’m not denying this weather but it’s not unusual.”

@KDABEATS remarked: “Hottest temperature ever recorded and people go ‘It’s just summer.'”
Others defended the focus of the headlines and the work of Just Stop Oil protestors, with @Steveredwolf sharing: “JUST STOP OIL ARE CORRECT WE should ALL support their aims – our lives depend on it!”
“Wildly unusual weather has always been a thing. The difference now is it’s not so unusual, it is becoming the norm. A norm that life on earth is going to struggle to survive,” @AlcamillaMollis pointed out.
Later, Chris Packham chatted to presenters Richard and Susanna Reid to explain why he believes the work of activists is important.
As Richard stated the protestors were “preaching to the converted” instead of focusing on countries such as China, Chris detailed: “The Climate Change Committee have said we’re not meeting any of our targets.”
The naturalist continued: “We’re talking about opening a new coal mine in Cumbria.
“Second point, are they targeting the right people, that’s a question I’m asking in a forthcoming documentary for Channel 4.”
When asked about accusations of spreading fear, Chris explained the importance of getting people to act now, adding: “”e can still avert complete catastrophe.”
