Season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy has seen some highs and lows for fans with Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo) at risk of losing her medical licence forever. However, she recently managed to convince the medical panel to let her continue to practice. All seemed to end happily enough but the midseason finale could change everything with a typically devastating Shonda Rhimes twist.
A promo for the midseason finale hints at positive things when Meredith is back at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.
However, fans of Shondaland are aware events will be going south as the show builds towards its big climax before its break.
The trailer sees a scene between Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) in which he says: “You saw Richard having sex with someone in his office?”
Then the video cuts to shock in the operating theatre as one medic yells: “This can’t be happening!”

The hint is someone is going to be killed off, leaving the staff devastated by the loss.
But just who is going to be in trouble? The answer is likely to revealed next year in the show’s midseason premiere.
The narrator also dramatically states: “In a fall finale with one shock after another and an ending that will leave you so on the edge, you’ll be counting down the days till Grey’s is back.”
A short synopsis from ABC for the episode reads: “Jo (Camilla Luddington) becomes a safe haven volunteer and gets a call that a baby has been dropped off at Station 19.
“Meanwhile, Meredith moves forward with her life after facing the medical board.
“Jackson takes a big step in his budding romance with Vic (Barrett Doss), while Bailey (Chandra Bailey) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) swap pregnancy updates on the fall finale of Grey’s Anatomy.”
This instalment marks a crossover with fire fighter drama Station 19, which is a spin-off from Grey’s Anatomy and sees Rhimes serve as an executive producer.
Both shows are set in Seattle and a crossover had been teased previously.
Audiences can expect to see characters from Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 interacting as they’re drawn into a huge emergency.
